ETHICAL BEHAVIOR – PART 2
GRADE 10 LESSON 31
Time Required: 30-45 minutes
Content Standards:
AA.S.6
Students will understand the relationship between personal
qualities, education, training and the world of work.
Indicators (Students will…):
AA.C.10.6.01 Identify steps which can be used to resolve ethical issues
related to school or work situations.
GOAL: Students will discuss ethics related to work situations and identify steps
and make recommendations to resolve these situation using sound ethical
practices.
Activity Statements: Students will understand the basic elements of ethical behavior in the
workplace, review the decision making process, and determine strategies for dealing with unethical
behavior in others.
Materials:
Handout 1 – Elements of Ethical Behavior in the Workplace
Handout 2 – Article "Ethical Behavior in the Workplace”
Procedures:
1. Discuss the fact that the ethical behavior learned in school also applies to the workplace stressing
that the consequences for unethical behavior can have serious implications including job loss or
legal issues.
2. Distribute Handout 1
3. With students working in groups of 3-4, have them complete the handout by providing using an
example of a situation that might occur in which each element would be applied to the
decision/action taken.
4. Have the students reflect on the small group activity and discuss each of the elements.
5. Identify the strategies used to make the decisions.

Discussion:
1. Pre-activity – What were the ethical behaviors identified in ethical behavior in school? Do those
behaviors apply to ethical behavior on the job? (Refer to 10.30)
2. Post-activity – Is there a “right” and “wrong” way to behave to a situation?
3. What strategies should be applied to making your decision? (Refer to 10.30)
4. What are other examples of unethical behaviors in the workplace?
5. What might be the consequences to overlooking the unethical behavior of others in the
workplace?

Extension Activities:
Distribute Handout 2 and encourage students to read the article and discuss it with their parents and
teachers.
Students will review above website, take assessments and analyze their own ethics in each identified
area. Students will develop a personal set of strategies to apply to ethical situations in the workplace.
They should discuss with parents and other adults what has worked for them and/or what are the pitfalls
to avoid.
Activity:
Have students read Dealing with Difficult Co-Workers and discuss how good communication skills are
necessary in their work life.
a. To “try out” real-life decision making in jobs (and to show the importance of good
decision making), have the students go to the Explore Careers section in CFWV.com.
b. Then ask them to select a career cluster that appeals to them.
c. From the list of careers in that cluster, choose one that has “Insider Info Only”
d. From the tabs on the left side of the page, choose “Real Life Activity”
e. Have the student try out the “Real-Life Decision Making” question for that career
