Lifetime
Achievement
Award
The IEEE Power Engineering
Society (PES) Lifetime Achievement
Award was established in 2007
to recognize exceptional power
engineers for outstanding
career-long contributions to
the art and science of electric
power engineering. The inaugural
recipient of this new award is one
of the most active members of the
protection and control community
- Stanley Horowitz. The citation
for the award states that it is
given to him “for leadership in the
field of power system protection
with a consistently high level of
innovative contributions to the art
of relaying during a career spanning
50 years”.
Stan started his career in 1950 at
American GAS & Electric (which
later became American Electric
Power Service Corp. (AEP)). He
retired in 1989 as a Consulting
Electrical Engineer.
Throughout his career Stan was
not only involved in engineering
projects for AEP – he also actively
participated and held leadership
positions in the work of national
and international professional
organizations. He is past Chairman
of the IEEE PES Power Systems
Relaying Committee and Member
of the IEEE PES Executive Board,
as well as past Chairman of CIGRE
Study Committee 34 – Protection
and Control.
Stan is also a Life Fellow of the IEEE
and was elected to the National
Academy of Engineering in 1995.
Stan Horowitz also worked hard on
sharing his knowledge with several
generations of protection and
control engineers through books
and as the Editor-in-Chief of the
IEEE PES magazine “Computer
Applications in Power”, as well as a
lecturer at universities in the
United States and around the
world.
