1. Design a storyboard for “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” with video directions
along the left side, the artistic depiction of the scene in the middle, and audio
directions on the right side.
2. Write a one page description of how you envision this movie using the questions that
follow in this handout. Be sure to include information from each section presented
here.
3. Present your storyboard to class. Your presentation must be professional. Assume
you are reporting a story for a news program. The content of your presentation
should include your reasons for depicting the story the way you did and describing
each scene including video and audio directions.
Story/Script: What changes must be made to make this a movie? What should be added
or cut? What dialogue should be used? Where should the scenes take place?
Setting: Where does the story take place? Describe the bridge. Describe the rope, the
plank, the piece of driftwood. Describe the surrounding area. Describe the water and the
bank where he comes ashore. Describe the forest. Describe the house. Where can we
shoot this film?
Characters: What do the characters look like? What are they wearing? How do they
act? What type of voice do they have? Use a real actor from today to fill the role of
Peyton Farquhar, the lieutenant, the company, the group of four, the sentinels, the
captain, Mrs. Farquhar, the spectators, the extras.
Plot: How should the scenes come together? How does the movie begin? How does it
end? What is the climax? What are the conflicts and how are they resolved? How are
characters developed? How do you build suspense? Do you do anything with the three
different sections of the story?
Camera: What types of camera shots do you use? What types of camera movements
should you use? How can camera add to the story line, emphasize the characters, add
suspense, bring the story to life?
Sound: What dialogue is used? What sounds do you hear throughout the movie? What
music can be used to add to the film? How does music help move the story, emphasize
characters, add suspense?
Lighting: How can lights and shadows be used to create mood? What natural lighting
and artificial lighting should be used? How can you make lighting creative or unique?
Design: Is it color, black and white or a combination? How long is the film? Divide the
story up into scenes and particular shots. What special effects can be used to add to the
film? How should the movie be edited together?
