The U.S. Department of Labor recently named
GIS-related careers as one of the three most
important evolving fields.
GIS technology is providing new opportunities
in traditional disciplines. The technology is
used by government agencies, educational
and research institutions and private
corporations to provide useful information for
a wide range of applications, including disease
surveillance, environmental mapping, urban
planning and crime location analysis.

from businesses, local governments and
agencies as well as students from various
academic disciplines.
an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution
Department of Geosciences
Required courses:
• Introduction to Geographic
Information Systems
Meeting the needs of the 21st
century workforce through
advanced training in Geographic
Information Systems (GIS)
Recognizing the important role GIS now plays
in shaping understanding of the environment
and in the management of public resources,
professors from Geosciences, Urban Planning
and Design, Criminal Justice and Criminology
and Computing and Engineering created a
technology-based curriculum designed to
prepare students for a variety of careers in the
rapidly growing GIS job market.
UMKC’s unique program focuses on fundamental
and advanced GIS training and related
computational methods, with an emphasis on
their applications in:
• environmental studies
• urban planning
• crime analysis
• database applications
• Advanced Geographic
Information Science
Elective courses
(students must complete three):
• Environmental Remote Sensing and
Digital Image Analysis
• Geocomputation for Earth and
Environmental Sciences
• Satellite Climatology
The program’s curriculum consists of five
courses (or 15 credit hours) covering important
and emerging aspects of the GIS field.
• Special Topics in Advanced GIS and
Remote Sensing
• Quantitative Methods in Planning
Students and working professionals enrolled in
the program will become proficient in using GIS
and remote sensing techniques to address various
environmental and urban issues. They will receive
practical GIS experience and supplement their
knowledge of geography, geology, environmental
studies and urban studies and planning.
• GIS for Urban Analysis I
• GIS for Urban Analysis II
• Advanced GIS for Crime Analysis
• Introduction to Digital Image Processing
• Database Design, Implementation
and Validation
• Data Structures and Algorithms
Additional optional courses may be
added. Visit http://cas.umkc.edu/geo/
for more information.
There is no time limit for participating students
to complete the program. A minimum 3.0
grade point average is required for successful
completion of the program.
