Historical Note
The Planned Parenthood sexual education collection was curated by Donna Bookout, who served as
the education coordinator for Planned Parenthood of East Central Indiana. During the nine years as
coordinator, Bookout worked with multiple local organizations to create sex education curricula for
children, adolescents, and adults. She also collected a variety of literature on the subject of sex education
through the years, all of which reflect the public's changing attitude on sexual health and relationships.
Bookout retired from Planned Parenthood in 1994 at the age of 62 but continued to assist with sex
education, youth development, and child abuse prevention programs in Delaware County.
The Planned Parenthood Federation of America was founded by Margaret Sanger on October 16, 1916.
The non-profit organization has since become the largest single provider of health services in the United
States. Planned Parenthood of Delaware County was established in Muncie in 1965.
Scope and Contents
This collection includes programs, curricula, articles, worksheets, books, posters, and other materials
collected by Donna Bookout in Delaware County, Indiana ranging from 1965 to 2012 regarding sex
education and family planning education. Includes educational materials on the subjects of abstinence,
contraception, fetus and infant development, sexual assault, teen pregnancy, etc. Also includes books kept
in Planned Parenthood of East Central Indiana's library as well as programs and literature distributed by
various Planned Parenthood regional divisions in the United States.
