Biographical Note / Historical Note / Administrative History
Arthur Hafner served as Dean of the University Libraries for a tenure of twelve years from 2002 until
early 2015 when he chose to retire. During his time as the libraries leader, Hafner was known for a strong
focus on employing technology in library service and using metrics to analyze and promote library
accomplishments and milestones. As the nature of library service came to hold an increasing focus on
digital resources, Hafner directed the libaries efforts toward providing patrons with greater access to
online databases and promotion of digitization efforts within the library.
Before working at Ball State University, Hafner served as the Dean of Libraries at Seton Hall University,
Chief Librarian at CUNY Staten Island, Director of the Library at the American Medical Association,
Director of Library Services at College of Osteopathic Medicine, and as Director of the Health Sciences
Library at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Dr. Hafner holds an MBA from Seton Hall, a Ph.D.
and Masters in Library Science from the University of Minnesota, an M.S. in Mathematics from the
