Understanding Time Zones
Many people were disappointed that the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, were
taped instead of broadcast live in the United States. Sydney, Australia, is 15 time zones
away from the United States. At 7:00 PM in Sydney, it is 4:00 AM in New York City. Time
differences have a strong impact on entertainment events, business activities, and on
general communications. Consulting a time zone map can help to make allowances for
time differences between various locations.
THE LANGUAGE OF MAPS In this time zone map, eastern Russia and Alaska are
shown. The map displays eight time zones. Each zone is marked at the top of the map
by a designated time. The International Date Line lies between the United States and
Russia. This line marks the starting point of each day. When the International Date Line
is crossed while traveling westward, the date is set forward to the next day. When traveling eastward across the line, the date is set back to the previous day. For example, if
you are traveling westward on a ship and you cross the date line at noon on Sunday
the date is set forward to noon on Monday.
