Natural Disaster Rubric
Assignment:
As a group, you will study and research assigned violent weather
phenomena. Each group member will research a section and present it to the
class in the given methods or an approved format of their choice.
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to explain how unequal solar heating of the earth
causes violent weather.
2. Students will be able to explain how violent weather is caused by air
mass movement.
3. Students will know how to remain safe during a violent weather
occurrence.
Activities:
1. Students will research the assigned natural disasters.
- Including safety, formation, specific events, locations most affected,
etc.
2. Students will gather information and put into a creative report style of
their choice.
3. Students will present their information to the class in their desired
format.

Other methods are more than welcome as long they are
approved by me or Mr. Foster.
 Methods that are listed in “bold” will receive extra credit for
creativity.

ONLY as a supplement to the above methods.

Disaster science
- What is the science behind the disaster, what
physical phenomena create this disaster
Disaster formation
- What factors are involved to allow disaster to occur
in detail? What makes this weather pattern extreme?
Disaster occurrences
- How many incidents happened in the past year,
when during the year are they most prevalent
Disaster effects
- What is the major cause for damage, what are the
effects of the damage (environ., city damage,
casualties, etc.)
Most recent event
- When did this last occur, how many people were
effected, how much damage was done
Warning agencies
- Who is responsible for warning the population,
contact information
Types of warnings
- What kinds of warnings exist, when are they
announced, how are they announced
Disaster preparedness
- What can you do to remain safe, what can be done to
minimize damage
Bibliography
- 3 sources with title and web address (if necessary)
