Completing the Square
A Method of Factoring
Try to create a Perfect Square Trinomial
a2 + 2ab + b2 = (a + b)2 Check to see if it is a a2 2ab + b2 = (a b)2 Perfect Square Trinomial
x2 + 12x + 6 = 0 If Not...
1. Get C on Right Side of Equation.
2. Divide B by 2 and Square it.
3. Add this number to both sides.
4. Create Perfect Square Trinomial.
5. Undo Squaring.
6. Get x by itself.
A must be a 1. If it is not, divide everything in the problem by A to get the value of A to be a 1.
