DECEMBER 2014 | NUTRITION NEWS YOU CAN USE
EAT WELL THROUGH FINALS SO
YOU CAN ENJOY THE HOLIDAY BREAK
This time of year is stressful for everyone with the anticipation of holiday
celebrations and preparation for those, but on top of that having final papers
to write, exams to take and presentations to give make it overwhelming at
times. Keeping your eating on track can help you feel energized during the
final weeks of the semester. Here are some tips on how to do that.
KEEP YOUR MEALS REGULAR. Take time to sit down and eat. Your body
will appreciate the break and your mind will feel refreshed and ready to
concentrate again. When you eat, have a balanced meal with whole grains,
fruits and vegetables, moderate amounts of lean protein and low fat dairy
foods. Grabbing something quick from a vending machine won’t give you the
nutrients that you’ll get from the balanced meal, and it will probably be a high
calorie choice.
EAT BREAKFAST EVERY DAY. Breakfast helps you “break the fast” and gives
you the energy you need to get your day started. Numerous studies have
shown that students are more alert and perform better on tests when they
have eaten breakfast. Healthy and quick breakfast ideas include toast with
peanut butter, whole grain cereal with milk and fruit, granola topped with
yogurt and fruit, or a hardboiled egg with toast.
GO EASY ON CAFFEINE. Coffee does give you a boost, but if you’re drinking
coffee drinks like mochas and smoothies you can be getting a lot of extra
calories from the fat and sugar in the added cream, whole milk and sugar. Try
black coffee or coffee with skim or low fat milk added and keep it to 3-4 cups
per day. An alternative to coffee is green tea, which is also a source of healthy
antioxidants. Green tea contains lesser concentrations of caffeine than coffee,
but still gives you an energy boost.
EAT EVERY THREE TO FOUR HOURS BY INCLUDING SOME HEALTHY SNACKS
IN BETWEEN YOUR MEALS. Eating frequently helps keep your energy level
steady and your brain fueled for late night studying. So plan ahead and have
some healthy snack choices on hand for between meals and late nights.
Fruit is great – apples, pears, oranges, bananas, canned peaches, pears or
applesauce, dried fruit like apricots or raisins. Vegetables like baby carrots,
green pepper strips, or a cut up veggie tray with low fat dip. Protein foods like
string cheese, peanut butter on crackers, yogurt, nuts like peanuts or almonds
(in small amounts). Snack foods like low fat microwave popcorn, pretzels,
baked tortilla chips with salsa, whole grain granola bars and rice cakes or soy
crisps. Dessert items like frozen fruit bars, low fat pudding, ginger snaps or
animal crackers. When you snack, check the Nutrition Facts for the serving
size, take that amount out of the package or bag and put it in a dish. This will
help you control how much you eat instead of going back to the bag several
times for more.
Work in some physical activity. Take a study break and hit the gym or go for
a walk. Your body will feel better and so will your mind, you’ll get an energy
boost and be ready to hit the books again.
HOW CAN I ENJOY THE HOLIDAY BREAK
WITHOUT FEELING LIKE I’M OUT OF
CONTROL WITH EATING?
The holidays are great occasions to spend time with family and friends, but
they usually involve a lot of social activities like holiday dinners and parties
where food and eating are highlights of the get together. If you’re out of
control and end up overeating, you’ll enjoy the party less because you will be
thinking about how uncomfortable you feel. Here are some strategies to help
you feel more in control and avoid overeating.
Have a snack before the meal or before going to the party. A piece of
fruit or a serving of yogurt is a healthy snack choice. When you get to
the dinner or party, look at all the foods and choose those you really
enjoy eating. Take small servings of those foods and don’t feel that
you have to try everything. Eat your food slowly and pay attention
to how you are feeling as you’re eating. Listen to your body – stop
eating when you’re comfortably full, rather than stuffed. Instead of
eating too much, take time to enjoy socializing with family and friends!

DID YOU KNOW? - FACTS ABOUT YOUR DINING SERVICE
BASELINE ACCOUNT CHOICES - 2ND SEMESTER DEADLINE!
UW-Stout is one of five UW campuses having a self-sustaining and selfoperated dining service. The other campuses are UW-Platteville, UW-Madison,
and UW-Milwaukee and UW-Steven’s Point.
What is self-sustaining?
The department must earn revenue to cover all expenses, both direct and
indirect to offer the services it provides. Revenue comes only from sales
of goods and services. This includes dining plans, catering and cash sales.
The dining budget receives no tax dollars, no segregated fees, and no tuition
dollars.
What is self-operated?
The university utilizes campus employees to operate the department rather
than an outside contractor, thus none of the earned revenue leaves the
campus, rather it remains in the budget to help cover on-going and future
capital expenses.
The UW-Stout dining service budget is $9.4 million dollars. Dining plan and
dining hall meal purchases account for about $6.7 million of this revenue
while catering and cash sales account for the remaining $2.7 million.
Who works for University Dining Service?
Our largest pool of employees for all our dining operations are students from
the Stout campus. There are approximately 400 Stout students employed by
the dining operations on the campus when the student center is open and
they work directly for the State of Wisconsin. These are great job opportunities
for students, right here on the campus. State of Wisconsin permanent
employees in dining service total 40 individuals. So in most cases when
someone experiences dining service it is through our student employees and,
“they are dining service”.
Now is the time to review what you have left in your Baseline account and
determine if you need a larger or smaller dining plan to start second semester.
Any Baseline Dining Funds left on your account, at the end of the semester will
be transferred to Baseline Plus funds and will be available for your use second
semester. YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE GIVEN THE SAME DINING PLAN FOR THE
2015 SPRING SEMESTER THAT YOU HAD DURING THE FALL SEMESTER.
YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE GIVEN THE SAME BASELINE PLUS FUNDS FOR THE
2015 SPRING SEMESTER THAT YOU RECEIVED FOR THE FALL SEMESTER.
You can check your current fund levels by logging onto your campus card
account at http://www.uwstout.edu/services/campuscard/index.cfm and
select “Log Onto: MyAccount” at the bottom of the page.
To view, raise or lower your Dining Plan and/or the amount of Baseline Plus
funds that will be placed on your card go to www.uwstout.edu/housing.
• Choose “Housing Contract Gateway” and log on using your Stout
username & password.
• Choose “Dining Plan and Baseline Plus Change Request”.
• Choose new plans from the drop down menu.
• Click “Finish” to submit your request.
You will receive a confirmation email when your plan has been changed.
Dining Plan and/or Baseline Plus amount must be changed by December 15th.
If you have questions, please contact University Housing at
housing@uwstout.edu or 7156-232-1121.
