Abstract: We investigate the QCD Dirac operator at finite temperature in the
region around the chiral phase transition by using (staggered) lattice and instanton liquid techniques.
We have observed a transition to localization in both eigenvectors and spectral correlations of the QCD Dirac operator as the temperature is increased.
Remarkable, the transition to localization for eigenvectors close to the origin of
the spectrum occurs precisely at the chiral restoration temperature. This fact
strongly suggests that the restoration of the chiral symmetry is produced by
the Anderson localization of the lowest QCD Dirac eigenvectors. In the bulk
we have also found a delocalization-localization transition similar to the one in
a 3D disordered system. Thus the eigenstates are multifractal and the spectral
properties are well described by critical statistics. Similar results are also obtained in the unquenched case though the critical temperature in this case is
lower.
