Early colonists settled in areas with large forests that included many types of
trees. Colonists often cut down trees, used the best wood to make products, and
burned the pieces that were not needed. These practices decreased the amount of
trees in the forests.

In 1874, General Custer led an expedition to the Black Hills which was part of the
Great Sioux Reservation given to them through the Fort Laramie Treaty. Custer
and his men were in search of gold. Once gold was found, people from the United
States battled against the Sioux until the government took over the land in 1877.
Based on the information above, how did land ownership and exploration affect
the relationship between the Sioux Indians and the settlers?
