Federal and state financial aid regulations require that a student maintain satisfactory academic progress (SAP) towards
degree completion in order to receive financial aid. The intent of financial aid is to fund a single graduate degree.
You may not receive financial aid for more than 125% of the number of credits needed to complete your degree.
Transfer credits, prior degree credits, withdrawn credits, and failed credits are included in this evaluation. For example,
if your degree requirement is 40, then you are eligible for financial aid for a maximum of 50 credits to earn your
graduate degree (40 x 125% = 50). The 125% can only be exceeded with the appropriate documentation of extenuating
circumstances which would explain the large number of credits completed. Dual majors, change of major, and the
addition of minors are not extenuating circumstances.
Instructions on How To Appeal:
1. In the space below, explain why you have amassed a large amount of credits while attempting your graduate
degree. Simply stating “I’m a transfer student” is not sufficient.
2. Meet with your academic advisor and create a program plan. The program plan must include:
• a list of the courses that are required for you to complete your degree
• your expected date of graduation
• your anticipated enrollment in each semester until graduation
The program plan must be signed by the student and advisor.
3. Email, fax, mail, or hand in this written appeal and your program plan to the Financial Aid Office for review.
Use the email address, fax number, or mailing address below.
4. You will be notified regarding the status of your appeal via your UW-Stout email address. Allow at least 2 weeks.
