PLANNING AN EFFECTIVE LITERACY JIGSAW
STEPS

EXAMPLE

Knowledge and Ideas: Compare and contrast one
author’s presentation of events with that of
another (e.g., a memoir written by and a
biography on the same person)

2. Choose text
On or above grade level if read aloud
Leveled if independent/small group

3. Plan Word Workers: Choose

4. Plan Supporters Group
Create statements that restate author’s
ideas (explicit) and/or statements that
are inferences (implicit) a reader can
make after reading a part of the text.
Both writers feel civics and social studies
education is important to American citizens.

5. Plan Concluders Group
Choose statements/paragraphs that
provide opportunity for students to
draw conclusions about the author or
topic (this depends on the standard you
have chosen)
6. Plan for Judges Table
Create tasks that require evaluation of
author technique or literary technique
or feature.
7. Early Finishers
Create tasks that focus on Creating,
Evaluating, and Analyzing.
This is also a great opportunity to
address essential questions that align
with standard.

2. Distribute text and jigsaw tasks using to introduce/review
standards, and expectations

3. Read Article
Read Aloud/Think Aloud
Popcorn reading
Choral reading (of key portions of text)
Reader’s Theatre (of key portions of text)
4. Divide students into 4 groups and assign tasks
Materials needed for each group

5. Allow groups to complete tasks. Teacher circulates to help
students complete tasks and check for understanding

6. Once groups are finished with tasks: Regroup students by
having students in each group count off by 4. Create Group
1,2,3,4
Each group should contain a member from each of the
previous groups (wordworker, concluder, supporter, judges
table)
7. Teacher facilitates group members presenting information.
Depending on grade level, teacher can introduce each
member and allot time for each.
8. Close jigsaw with formative assessment of information
shared during groupwork and sharing of Early Finisher Work
It is imperative to share data results of assessment to help
students take ownership of their student teaching and
maintain high accountability for the following jigsaw activity.
