1. Basic Information
What is Credit by Examination?
Credit by Examination is a way of earning college credit for course material that you have
already mastered. This type of credit is offered in most of MCC-BTC’s programs.
The advantage to you, the student, is that you can complete your college education more
quickly by not taking courses that cover material you already know. You can save money,
too; the fee for Credit by Examination is half that of regular tuition. For example, if you live
in-district and complete a three credit hour course, the nominal cost to you would be $294.
The same course credit would be only $147 if you complete it through Credit by Exam. The
credit hours you earn through Credit by Exam apply directly towards a degree or certificate
just the same as those earned by taking classes.
Please be aware that Credit by Examination is an in-depth measurement of your knowledge
and skills at the college level. This may be different than exams you’ve been given in a high
school or career center setting.
This level of rigor is necessary, since completion of a college-level test indicates that you have
the necessary knowledge and skills for more advanced work.
If you do not pass the examination, there is no impact on your student record or GPA,
however you will need to take the corresponding course to ensure that you have mastered its
material.

Credit by Examination Enrollment Process
1. Apply for admission to MCC. You can do this online at www.mcckc.edu/apply.
2. Examinations for each course are given on an on-demand basis. Visit or call BTC to begin
the examination scheduling process. A list of courses available for Credit by Exam is in
Section 3 of this document. You can reach BTC at (816) 604-5200.
Once you have requested an exam, a BTC program coordinator will contact you to
schedule your test. Most tests have both a theory and a hands-on portion, and these may
be scheduled on different days.
3. Once your test is scheduled, you will need to visit MCC-BTC Student Services to pay the
course fee and complete the MCC Credit by Exam Agreement.
Please note the following:
a) The test fee is half the normal course tuition and is nonrefundable. No retests are
permitted.
b) Credit received by obtaining a satisfactory score will be transcripted upon enrollment
at MCC.
c) A maximum of 30 credits can be granted through Credit by Examination.
4. You will receive a receipt and a copy of the MCC credit by exam agreement.
You must take these documents with you to the scheduled test and give them to the test
proctor.
5. When you come to take the test, give your receipt and MCC Credit by Exam agreement to
the person administering the test.
6. MCC-BTC will notify you by telephone or e-mail of your test results within one week.
Note: Successful completion of Credit by Examination tests results in a “P”ass grade on
your transcript. Credit by Examination results are not used for calculating your GPA. If
you do not pass the exam, nothing shows on your transcript.
