 Biomimicry in Buildings: Can Nature Inspire Green Building Solutions? Siobhan Watson Biomimicry in New York State’s Green Building Sector Terrapin Bright Green and Biomimicry 3.8 are working with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to spur biomimetic research and development in New York State’s industrial sector. Our presentation will highlight the role of policy support for biomimetic design, the role of the “biologist at the design table,” and the experience of manufacturers who have used biomimicry in their companies. Siobhan Watson, project manager for this effort, will describe our team’s perspective on the potential for building technologies to incorporate biomimicry and advance next‐generation green design and construction. She will discuss our team’s experience bringing biologists to the design table for workshops in our NYSERDA program, and take the audience through the process our team implements to spur biomimetic innovation. Ms. Watson will explain Terrapin’s role in bringing together a team of outreach partners and participants, as well as the process of conducting workshops and follow‐up consulting aimed at helping to develop and bring advanced biomimetic technologies to market. The presentation will give audience members an understanding of how building technologies based on biomimicry may be able to help companies reap enormous business gains while achieving greater product sustainability. Bio Siobhan Watson is a project manager at Terrapin Bright Green, contributing to policy, planning, and economic development work. Currently, she is managing an effort to use biomimicry to spur innovation in manufacturing in New York State. Siobhan’s previous work includes policy analysis in the New York City Council’s Infrastructure Division and climate change planning with the Regional Plan Association. Siobhan holds a Master in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from Vassar College.
