RE: Fall 2015 Activities
Greetings!
We hope you are having a productive and wonderful summer, and are looking forward to joining us this fall
for your concentration year in the School of Social Work.
In anticipation of your arrival, we put together a packet of information for you that is located in your mailbox
here at the School of Social Work. When you arrive for your first day of classes, please check your mailbox
(mailboxes are located on either side of the auditorium on the first floor). The packet contains important
information such as your concentration year faculty advisor, “how to’s” at the School of Social Work (such as
laptop configuration information, reserving space in the building, making copies, printing documents, etc.)
and resources for getting around Chapel Hill.
Classes and Field Education
Classes begin on Tuesday, August 18. Concentration field placements are scheduled to begin Wednesday,
August 19. Contact your Agency Field Instructor to confirm when and where you should report.
Registration, Tuition & Fees
Tuition and fees must be paid by August 11, 2015. Please contact the SSW registrar, Beth Sauer, at
bhsauer@email.unc.edu or 919-962-6443 if you have any questions about registration.
Financial Aid / Jobs
If you have questions regarding loans or your federal aid, please contact the UNC Office of Scholarships &
Student Aid: (919) 962-8396 or aidinfo@unc.edu. You can also find helpful information on their website at
http://studentaid.unc.edu/. A limited number of research and program assistant positions will be emailed to
all students by mid-August.
Residency
The Graduate School handles concerns related to North Carolina residency for tuition purposes. If you have
residency questions, please visit http://gradschool.unc.edu/studentlife/resources/residency/ or email
grad_residency@unc.edu.
You should complete a residency application if you have an undetermined or nonresident status and wish to
be considered for in-state residency status for tuition purposes. Applications with all supporting
documentation must be filed online by 5 p.m., September 2, 2015. The application is located on the
Graduate School’s website at: http://gradschool.unc.edu/student/residency/
UNC One Card
Final-year Distance Education students are now officially “on-campus” students and will need to get a UNC
One Card, which allows access to the library, recreational facilities, and other services. The One Card office is
on the ground level of UNC Student Stores located at 207 South Road, across the street from the Bell Tower
on campus.
Purchasing Books
Textbooks can be purchased by logging into the Course Materials portal, http://connectcarolina.unc.edu/ at
UNC Student Stores (919-962-5066). Another option is to get the title of the textbooks from the course
syllabus and place an order online or at a local bookstore. SoWoSO is coordinating a used book sale via
Google docs; information will be emailed to all students the first week of August.
Health Insurance
UNC requires full-time students registered as “on-campus” to have health insurance coverage. All eligible
students will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the UNC System Student Mandatory Health Insurance
Plan administered by BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) of North Carolina unless they show evidence of an existing
“creditable” health insurance policy.
If your health insurance is covered by a Research Assistantship, you will be covered by the Student Blue
RA/TA and Post Doc Insurance Plan which is also administered by BCBS. More information will be provided in
August to students with a required Research Assistantship regarding BCBS. RAs will not be able to opt out of
the UNC System Student Mandatory Health Insurance Plan until they have been matched with their RA
appointment and complete their human resources paperwork.
Change of Address
Please notify Student Services Assistant, Tiffany Carver, at 919-843-8452, or tscarver@email.unc.edu of any
name, address, phone, and e-mail changes you may have made over the summer. You should also enter this
new information at http://connectcarolina.unc.edu/.
Parking
Information about parking at UNC-Chapel Hill can be found at http://move.unc.edu/ . Many students obtain
a Commuter Alternative Program (CAP) permit to park at a designated “park and ride” lots and take a bus to
campus. You may purchase annual, daily, or weekly parking passes for the “park and ride” lots at
http://move.unc.edu/cap/ . If you are only here for one or two days per week, that might be beneficial.
2015-2016 Special Events
We hope you will join us on Saturday, August 29, 11:00am – 2:00pm, for the annual SSW Potluck at Wilson
Park in Carrboro. This event is a yearly tradition that brings together faculty, staff, and students for a
wonderful afternoon of fun activities and great food! Another tradition is Harambee, a multi-cultural
celebration, which will be held Spring 2015 in the UNC School of Social Work in the 5th floor lounge.
We will also host two “Sweets with our Suite” open houses in the Academic and Student Affairs office for
final year students. Please join us either Tuesday, August 18 or Monday, August 24 from 1-2pm in suite 370
to meet the Academic and Student Affairs staff, ask any questions you might have, and enjoy a sweet treat!
Optional Activities
On Saturday August 8, the School of Social Work will host the annual Students Achieving Graduate Education
(S.A.G.E.), which is a pre-orientation program for entering students of color and international students. All
incoming students are welcome to attend. S.A.G.E. will be held in Chapel Hill at the UNC School of Social
Work, 5th Floor Lounge, 10:00am -12:30pm.
If you would like a tour of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, please contact Annie Francis at
amfranci@email.unc.edu or 919-843-9227. This opportunity is available any time over the summer and
throughout the fall semester.
