Group Project 1
Due: Monday Feb. 14th, 2011
2-3pm in MEC 206


Work in teams of 3 or 4.
You will present this on Monday Feb. 14th in a power point presentation
Each presentation will be 10 minutes long (no longer – treated as a conference presentation and will be
stopped at 10 min.).
Put the presentation on the W:\everyone\Bill Knowlton\ by 8am Monday 2/14 (if you do not know what
this is, ask)
By 8am Monday 2/14, provide:
o an electronic copy of your presentation to me (email electronic copy)
o a copy of your calculations – if in Mathematica, email electronic copy
Just prior to the time the class will present, provide:
o a hard copy of your presentation
o a copy of your calculations – if hard copy
o a hard copy (or scanned) of your written calculations
o a hard copy of your grade sheet with names and presentation title (on course website)
o signed hard copy Project Self Evaluation Form (on course website)
o bring a flash drive with all your electronic copies with you to the presentation (just in case)
Project:
I happen to be ignorant on how to use the JANEF Thermochemical Tables. It is your job to teach me how to use
them. Go to Boise State University’s Albertson Library and look up the JANAF Thermochemical Tables / M. W.
Chase, Jr. et al. (more information below). Using the JANAF Thermochemical Tables, do the following in your
presentation: (be sure to reference)
a. Explain what the tables represent.
b. Explain the definitions of the data in the tables.
c. Explain how to use the tables to calculate Hrxn (i.e., Hformation), SrxnandGrxn. Do so using the
approach you learned in class. That is:
i. Show your main reaction and half reactions
ii. Sketch your reaction on a H versus Temperature plot
iii. Show your calculations of: Hrxn (i.e., Hformation), SrxnandGrxn.
iv. Correlate/compare them to the Grxn of the reaction given in the JANAF tables.
d. Choose and use a specific materials system to do part a-c.
e. Actually perform the calculations and turn them in.
Alternatively, if you are in Dr. Butt’s research group, there are several thermodynamic simulation programs
available. You may choose one of these software simulation programs and teach me how to use one in place of
the JANEF Thermochemical Tables using the approach outlined in a-e.
Grading:
The oral presentation will be graded based on the grade sheet posted on the website and the Project Self
Evaluation Form.
Due Dates:
February 4: Turn email a list of your teammates.
February 7: Email me the materials system you have chosen to use for the project.
February 15: Presentations will be held Monday at 2-3pm in MEC 206.
