COURSE TITLE & DESCRIPTION: (Credit 4.0) This is the second semester of a three semester calculus sequence. It includes techniques of integration, applications of integration (area, volume, arc length,
work, hydrostatic force, center of mass, etc.), improper integrals, sequences and infinite series. Finally, the
course covers three-dimensional analytic geometry (3D vectors, dot and cross products).
Prerequisite: Math 151 or equivalent.
TEXT: Calculus: Early vectors, Preliminary Edition, by Stewart and TAMU Math Department
COURSE WEB PAGE: http://calclab.math.tamu.edu/docs/math172/
GRADING POLICY: Your grade will be determined by three exams, a cumulative final exam, and
quizzes. The weights of each of these are as follows:
EXAM 1 - 100 points, EXAM 2- 100 points, EXAM 3- 100 points, FINAL - 200 points, Quizzes and
homework- 100 points
The grading scale is usual 60-70-80-90%: (score< 60 - F, 60 ≤score< 70- D, 70 ≤score< 80- C, 80 ≤score< 90
- B, score≥ 90 - A)
Tentative dates of the exams: Exam 1- September 27, Exam 2- October 25, Exam 3- November 20.
Final exam: December 12, 8-10 p.m., regular classroom
HOMEWORK: Suggested homework problems will be given to you the first day of classes (they are also
posted on the web page http://calclab.math.tamu.edu/docs/math172/syllabus/currenthw.html). It is very
important for your success in class that you do your homework regularly, completing all of the suggested
problems and practicing working with Maple. Visit me to discuss these problems and seek my help as needed.
ATTENDANCE, ABSENCES and MAKE-UP POLICY: Attendance is one of your responsibilities
for the class. I expect you to be in class every class period. Come to class on time and be a good team
member by actively participating in it. Make-ups for missed exams or quizzes will only be allowed for a
university approved absence in writing (see http://student-rules.tamu.edu/rule7.htm for details). To be excused, you need to provide necessary documentation. If you miss an exam or a quiz due to an illness, you
need to provide a confirmation of your inability to attend the exam from a medical care professional. Please
note that an absence for a non acute medical condition does not constitute an excused absence. Whenever
possible, inform me about your excusable absence before an exam is missed; at the latest, I have to be
informed about your excused absence before the end of the second working day after the absence or you
loose your right for a make-up.
LATE WORK POLICY: No late work will be accepted unless there is a university approved excuse in
writing.

SOURCES of HELP. First, if you have a question, do not hesitate to ask before, after, or during a
class. If you are struggling or just want to get an assessment of your knowledge before an exam comes, please
use the following opportunities to assist you.
• Office hours. I encourage you to attend my office hours to get individual help. You do not need
an appointment to come to regular office hours. If your schedule does not permit you to come to
the announced office hours, send me an e-mail with your available times and we will schedule an
appointment.
• Week-in-Review. Every week there will be a week-in-review conducted by Math Department faculty
member for all sections of Math 152/Math172. Problems will be posted before each session. You will
benefit the most if you work on posted problems before a week-in-review is conducted.
See http://www.math.tamu.edu/teaching/operationspg.html for week-in-review information and schedule.
• Help Sessions. The Mathematics Department offers help sessions for Math 152/172 students.
See http://math.tamu.edu/teaching/helpsession/ for schedule and more information.
• Streaming video. Go to Streaming video link to Math 152 at
http://www.math.tamu.edu/teaching/operationspg.html to get one more opportunity to see how typical Calculus II problems are solved.
SPECIAL SERVICES: The American with Disabilities ACT (ADA) is a federal anti-discrimination
statute that provides comprehensive civil rights protection for persons with disabilities. Among other things,
the legislation requires that all students with disabilities be guaranteed a learning environment that provides
for reasonable accommodation of their disabilities. If you believe you have a disability requiring special accommodations, please contact the Department of Student Life, Services for Students with Disabilities (Cain
Hall, Room B118, or call 845-1637).
SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY: Copying work done by others, either in class or out of class, looking
on other student’s papers during exams or quizzes, having possession of unapproved information in your
calculator/computer, and/or having someone else do your work for you are all acts of scholastic dishonesty.
These acts, and other acts that can be classified as scholastic dishonesty, will be prosecuted to the full extent
allowed by University policy. In this class, collaboration on assignments, either in class or out of class, is
forbidden unless permission to do so is granted by the instructor. For more information on university policy
