March 2015
Principal’s Message:
Grade 8 Ottawa Trip:
Congratulations and thank
you to our Glenbrook
School Council for coordinating another extremely
successful Dance-a-thon.
This group of dedicated parents
worked tirelessly to organize our
“Freaky Friday” school Dance-a-thon
held on Friday, February 13th. A
special thank you to Nikki Williams
for acting as the coordinator for this
event.
Nikki solicited prizes and
created a student dance committee
that provided outstanding leadership
throughout this fundraising initiative.
Again this year our Grade 8 students will be travelling to Ottawa for their end
of year trip. This excursion will take place from June 2nd to June 4th, 2015
Our students will visit the Canadian War Museum, tour the Museum of Civilization and stay at Carleton University. Our Grade 8’s will also participate in a
guided tour of the Parliament Buildings and will visit the Diefenbunker.
All Glenbrook students took part in
the dance. They were able to raise
well over $5600.00 this year through
sponsorships. Scotiabank matched
our students’ fundraising efforts up
to a total of $5000.
With Scotiabank’s assistance, a total of
$10600.00 has been raised through
this Dance-a-thon. We now have well
over $35 000 that will be used to develop our Natural Playground Project!
We sincerely appreciate the financial
and administrative assistance that we
have received from the representatives at Scotiabank in Orangeville.
We would like to thank all parents
and community members for supporting this event. We had many prizes
donated for the dance-a-thon and
received outstanding financial support. A special thanks to Jerry Daniel
of JD DJ Services for donating the
music for the day.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed having an experienced
DJ provide music for
the dance.
Our students will also participate in a cycling tour along
the Rideau Canal. We are very pleased to be able to
offer this excursion to our students again this year. We
thank Mr. Henry, Ms. Walter and Mrs. Kennedy for organizing this trip for our students.
Grade 7’s to Attend Camp Kandalore:
Our Grade 7 students will be going to Camp Kandalore from Monday, June
8th until Wednesday, June 10th, 2015. Our students will participate in a variety of team building and leadership activities including a low and high ropes
course, orienteering, canoeing, rock climbing and low organizational games.
We believe that this camp will allow our students to develop their leadership
skills so that they can continue to utilize these skills at Glenbrook next year.
We thank Mrs. Kennedy, Ms. Walter and Mr.
Henry for organizing this excursion for our students. We are confident that they will enjoy this
trip.
Dental Screening for JK, SK Grade 2 & 8 Students:
Public Health provides dental screening for all student in JK, SK Grades 2, 8
and other students as appropriate. Screening is provided under the Health
Protection and Promotion Act and any information is collected according to the
Public Health privacy policy.
The JK, SK, Grade 2 and Grade 8 students at Glenbrook will be screened on
Thursday, March 12th and Friday, March 13th, 2015. A “screening” is a quick
look in the mouth by a registered dental hygienist. She uses a sterilized dental mirror and protective vinyl gloves for each child. This screening is not
meant to replace a full examination by your family dentist. Parents will be notified if the hygienist notices an urgent dental condition.
If parents do not want their child screened at school, please call the Public
Health Unit at 1-800-265-7293 ext. 5662 one week before the date of the visit.
Please leave your child’s full name, school, birth date and grade. For more
information, please call the Dental Intake Line at 1-800-265-7293 ext. 2661.
March Break — Monday, March 16th to Friday March 20th
Child Abuse Prevention:
Canadian Tire Money:
It is the policy of the Upper Grand District School Board to provide child abuse
prevention education for all students. The goal of the Prevention Curriculum is
to give children and parents the knowledge and skills necessary to reduce the
incidence of child abuse and to encourage the reporting of suspected cases.
We encourage parents to discuss the concepts taught in the Child Abuse Prevention Curriculum with your child. Please contact Tara Bernard-McCabe,
our Child and Youth Counsellor, 519-925-0580 (ext #227), if you have questions about any of these programs.
Our school continues to collect Canadian Tire money. All Canadian
Tire money donated by parents, students and staff will be “matched” by
Canadian Tire. We plan to use this
money to purchase additional skating
helmets and sports equipment for
the school. The Canadian Tire deposit box is located in the front office
of the school. If you have Canadian
Tire money that you
would like to donate,
please send it in with
your child.
Nutrition Break Supervisors:
Lost and Found:
We currently have three (3) Nutrition Break Supervisors who come to the
school during our nutrition breaks to supervise students in their classrooms
while they eat their snacks and then supervise students on the yard for the
remaining 20 minutes of the break. This is a paid position.
Lost and found items are located in a
box in the front hallway of the school
beside the front office. We encourage all parents to come to the school
to examine these items. We would
like to ensure that these articles of
clothing etc. are
returned to their
rightful
owners.
Unclaimed
items
will be packed up
on March 13th and
will be donated to a
local charity.
The personal safety programs utilized at the school include: "Kids in the
Know", the “C.A.R.E.” kit, and the “Touching” kit. These programs include
lesson plans for teachers, a video, discussion posters, worksheets, and role
playing activities. Teachers may use all or parts of the programs.
Occasionally we require replacement supervisors when a supervisor is unable
to fulfill her duties due to illness or other commitments. If you are available
during the school hours (10:30—11:10 and 12:50—1:30) and would be willing
to take on these supervision duties, please contact the
school office at your earliest convenience (519) 925-0580.
We are in the process of adding to our occasional Nutrition
Break Supervisor list during the month of March. A Criminal
Reference Check is required for this position. We appreciate any assistance that you can provide.
A Message From Mrs. Stewart in The School Library:
Students in Kindergarten, Grades 1 , 2 and 3 are continuing to read Blue Spruce Books in the library. So
far we have read books about Joshua Bell in The Man With the Violin, colours and feelings in My Blue is
Happy, architects in Young Frank Architect, and the effects of a giant wave in Kenta in the Big Wave.
Students have been exploring books with a variety of activities and will vote for their favourite book during
the month of April. Junior and Intermediate students are enjoying the Silver Birch and Red Maple book
Clubs. Book club students are encouraged to continue reading over the March Break as they need to
have read 5 books to qualify to vote. Books are available at the Glenbrook and Shelburne libraries. Junior and Intermediate students can share their opinions about the books they have read by accessing the reading club Blogs at UG2GO
and clicking on the club link. Happy Reading!

Reminding our Students about the Importance of Obeying Crossing Guards:
As the snow melts and the days get longer, it is a perfect time to talk about the safety of our children getting to and from
school. Glenbrook has 2 Crossing Guards who are responsible for helping children cross our roadways safely. Often
our Crossing Guards are faced with situations that are safety concerns for the children and the Guards themselves.
Please remember that:
 Crossing Guards are there to protect the children. Be patient and obey the Crossing Guard’s signals.
 When the Crossing Guard is on the road—drivers must wait until the children are all the way across the road before
going through the intersection.
 Drivers need to respect the Crossing Guards signal until the children are safely across.
 School zones are 40 km per hour. Please check your speed when driving in school zones.
 Parents should talk to their children about the role of a Crossing Guard and the importance
of following their signals.
 Unsafe driving behaviour should be reported to our police service.
Please show your support of the Crossing Guards with a smile or a wave!
