First-Year Commons Program
Designed by university administrators and the Residence Life Department, our First-Year
Commons Program helps incoming students during their first year of college.
The benefits of this program are many, including an instant network of friends and an empowering
academic support system led by highly trained student and professional staff members. Students
who participate in this program live and study with other first-year students and have access to
resources designed to give them an academic edge.
First-year halls host programs focused on enhancing time management, note taking, and study
and communication skills. The Ed and Gwen Cole Student Success Center located in Lumberjack
Landing houses study areas, a classroom and a computer lab.
Residential Learning Communities
Students are able to become an active part of their community based on interests. The
department offers several options for students to live and learn together focusing on learning
communities, including: Freshman Leadership Academy, STEM, Gen Jacks, Community
Service, Honors, International, Outdoor Experiences, and Pre-Nursing. For more
information visit sfasu.edu/reslife.
Residence Life Staff
The opportunity to find your place on campus awaits you. The responsibility is yours, but you
are not alone. Each community has staff members to support and assist you as you find your
place in the community. The staff is well-trained, energetic and dedicated to making your oncampus living experience educational and positive.
Get Involved
The Residence Hall Association is a student-led organization for all students living on
campus. Through elected representatives, RHA speaks for students on issues pertaining to
on-campus living. Students participate in programs and activities that involve academic, social,
recreational and personal growth, as well as diversity awareness and community service. Each
resident living on campus is automatically a member of RHA.
Campus Living Requirements
For a sneak peek at our residence halls and to take
a virtual tour, visit sfasu.edu/reslife.
Students who are younger than 21 and have earned fewer than 60 hours of coursework reside and
dine on campus and have the opportunity to discover the full university experience. If you qualify
and plan to live off campus, complete the off-campus permit request on your mySFA account.
Application Process
Students who have applied for university admission may apply to live on campus. You do
not have to be admitted to apply for housing. Applications are accepted up to one year
in advance of the semester you plan to attend SFA. The application and deposit may be
submitted by logging in to mySFA, accessing “Campus Life” and selecting “Residence
Life Services.” Please visit sfasu.edu/reslife to view detailed instructions. Acceptance
of the deposit does not guarantee your assignment or placement.
Bacterial Meningitis Shot Requirement:
State law requires that you have a bacterial meningitis shot at least 10 days prior
to attending classes or moving into an on-campus residence hall.
For more information, visit us on the Web at:
sfasu.edu/admissions/docs/meningitis.pdf.
Residence Hall Assignments
Admitted students will be given a residence hall assignment based on the date that the
application process was completed. The process is complete when the meningitis shot
record is received in the admissions department and when the residence hall application
and deposit are submitted. The latest of these dates will be used as the priority assignment
date. New student assignment dates are posted on our website. Students will receive an email
sent to their SFA email account, which provides instructions on how to view and accept the
assignment. Assignments must be accepted through the student’s mySFA account within two
weeks. Failure to accept the assignment will result in reassignment to another space on campus.
Special Accommodations
If you require special accommodations, you may complete the special accommodation
request form on our website. To be eligible for special accommodations, you must provide
documentation of your permanent disability. The Residence Life Department will consult
with Disability Services and/or the Residence Life Accommodations Assessment Committee
regarding documentation and provision of accommodations.
Roommate Preference
If you have a roommate preference, you should use the roommate assignment request
located on the Residence Life application. Roommate preferences are not guaranteed, but
they are accommodated whenever possible. Students must request each other and list the
same residence hall facility preference(s).
Meal Plans
All students living in the residence halls (except units that have full kitchens) are required to
purchase a residential meal plan. You will automatically be assigned the 7 day 14 meal plan.
To change a meal plan, log in to mySFA, click the “Campus Life” tab and click on the “Meal
Plans - Sign up or change” link. You must be registered for classes prior to changing a meal
plan. Meal plan transactions should be handled through mySFA or the Card Services office
located in Room 1.205 of the Baker Pattillo Student Center. Visit sfadining.com for
more information.
Deposit Refunds
You may cancel your housing and receive a refund of your residence hall deposit by
completing the online cancellation form through Residence Life Services located on
mySFA. Visit our website for cancellation deadlines and updated information.
