Welcome to our first electronic edition of the
School of Math and Sciences newsletter. As you
read the articles posted here, please take
notice of the many academic accomplishments
of our students and faculty through courserelated activities and through numerous
research programs in biology, chemistry,
geology, and math.
I continue to be amazed by the dedication of
our faculty and students to the mission of our
university - "....to educate students in an
academically challenging, learning-focused and distinctively Christian
environment for professional success and service to God and
humankind." Just consider that our faculty and students conduct most of
the research projects highlighted here as an addition to their normal course
loads! Truly, this is an expression of our faith and commitment to a sense of
purpose that extends beyond self-centered career goals.
There will be follow-up issues of this newsletter in which we will continue to
elaborate on the many efforts of our faculty and students to carry
Wayland's light to the world. Thank you for your continued prayers,
participation, and support that enables us to grow and prosper "......in
service to God and humankind."

Dr. Tim Walsh spent most of his summer honing his
craft as he participated in a field program and three
workshops in which he presented posters on research
done at Wayland Baptist University in geology.
An assistant professor of geology at Wayland, Walsh
was selected from professors across the nation to
help facilitate the Bighorn Basin Field Program in
Montana and Wyoming, an all-expense paid weeklong "school" for undergraduate students.
Cosponsored by the Geological Society of America and ExxonMobil, the
program provided intensive study into the petroleum industry and its use
of sequence stratigraphy in the interpretation of geologic features.

Environmental Science Program Focuses
on Environmental Stewardship
Spotlight on our programs
During each issue of the School of Mathematics and Sciences Enewsletter, we will highlight one of our programs, complete with details
on coursework required. This month's highlighted program is our newest
in the school. The Environmental Science program was added beginning
in Fall of 2010.
Our program, housed in the Moody Science building on the Plainview, TX,
campus, is designed to prepare students for careers in industry,
government, or to pursue graduate studies in environmental science or
related fields. Along with an emphasis on Christian environmental
stewardship, we integrate hands on experience in the design and
implementation of green technologies that can be applied at the
homestead scale or in the mission field.
