Faculty Profile
Greetings!
It has been some time since our last newsletter
because of some staffing changes. Dr. William
Hahn and Megan McPherson are now the new
newsletter editors. It takes a while to establish a
routine, but we expect to post electronic newsletters every other month
with hardcopy editions once or twice a year.
In a previous newsletter I wrote about the Kenya Studies Program that Dr.
Kasner and I were putting together. Costs associated with the program
were moderate given the range of educational and personal experiences the
program offered, but were still too much for most students to afford.
Undaunted, Dr. Kasner and I are re-formulating the program for a summer
2013 offering. The content and emphasis of the field experience will remain
very similar to what we organized for this year - but WE ARE LOOKING
FOR BENEFACTORS to offset some of the expenses for our students. If
you would be willing to help, please contact me or Dr. Kasner directly.

Dr. Hahn is a Professor of
Mathematics and is the new
Associate Dean of the School of

the Fall of 2004. He received
B.S. and M.S. degrees in
Mathematics from Baylor
University and M.Stat. and Ph.D.
degrees in Statistics from North
Finally, as I am writing this note, workers are assembling the tower on the
roof of Moody Science that will hold the approximately 1 kilowatt wind
turbine that we are building for our environmental science program. In a
later article we will highlight that accomplishment.
In closing, please continue to pray for the success of our programs and our
students. Every day I am reminded of how generous God's blessings are,
especially the blessing of serving Him through Wayland!
God Bless - HDG

PLAINVIEW - Dr. Scott Franklin is enjoying his new job, a position that
allows him to maintain a classroom presence, continue to oversee
summer research projects in mathematics and put his technical skills to
work in the computing arena.
Franklin, who has served as a professor of mathematics since 2000,
was recently named the new director of Wayland Baptist University's
Virtual Campus, taking the place of Jay Sample who moved to a similar
position at Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, Calif. Franklin
has served as the associate dean of the School of Math and Sciences in

Each year, Dr. Grover has taken his General Ecology class to New Mexico
for an extended field trip. 2011 was a special year because we added a
day to the trip by traveling to Glorieta Conference Center on Wednesday,
Sept. 28th, so that we could spend on full day (Thursday) in the Tesuque
Watersheds near Santa Fe, NM.

News & Events
During this past fall, the Conservation Biology class carved out a wide
swathe across the state of Texas, traveling to a number of locations. At
all sites, students were able to see rare, threatened, and endangered
species and/or their habitat. They were also able to interact directly in
the field with conservation biologists who work to protect these species
at each site to get a flavor of the types of career opportunities available
and the way in which conservation is practiced "on the ground".

The Mineralogy Field Trip Fall 2011 was taken to Rio Grande Rift Valley
of New Mexico. Mineralogy students, geology majors and minors,
combined for 13 students who attended. The field trip exposed students
to the geology of the Rio Grande Rift Valley of New Mexico and taught
them about the various geological, and hydrological processes that were
responsible in the formation of the region.

Creation Care Week Devotionals
During Creation Care week on November 7-12, Dr. Grover provided daily
email devotionals to the Plainview campus of Wayland Baptist University.
I believe Dr. Grover said it best in his last devotional of the week when
he stated: "I think we are all in agreement that this week is about
honoring our Creator. We are indeed a part of his creation and we are
entrusted with the responsibility to nurture and care for that creation - to
till and keep the garden. " I encourage you to look further into Dr.
Grover's devotionals as he used God's word and what it means as
Christians to bring to light "Creation Care".
