Animation
Computer, puppet and hand-drawn animation are used extensively in feature films, television,
commercials, video games, educational multimedia, Internet sites, scientific simulations,
architectural models and forensic evidence. Animation is a labor-intensive art form and
often requires the skills and creative contributions of a large team of collaborators, which
opens up possibilities for aspiring animators. Employment opportunities in this field include
screenwriting, storyboarding, layout, character animation, effects animation, art direction,
sound design, computer-modeling, lighting, cinematography, editing, technical direction
and production management. Individuals just beginning an animation career often work as
freelancers. The California Employment Development Department’s projections through 2016

knowledge of auto repair to specialized training specific to components such as brakes,
transmissions, engines, electronics and air conditioning. The number of employment
opportunities in California for automotive technicians is expected to increase by 14.2% by
2016. (Source: Labor Market Info www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov)

Business Software Applications
Child Development
Across a number of trades and industries, one of the most common job requirements is
proficiency in business-related computer applications. Job seekers who have proven experience
in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software have a better chance of entering the
job market and succeeding in the office environment. On a more focused level, there is also a
regular need for individuals with experience in electronic publishing and Web development to
handle corporate communications in the increasingly digital world. The job outlook is good for
people with publishing skills; it is very good for people with word processing, spreadsheet and
presentation skills.
Child development professionals work directly with children from birth through 8 years of
age in a variety of positions such as teachers, teacher’s aides, home care providers and early
childhood mental health specialists. Child development coursework provides the foundation
for such diverse career options as pediatric nursing, child psychology, children’s librarianship,
playground design, early childhood program director, family court child advocate and parent
educator. Salaries in the field are fair, with higher wages going to those with more college
units and to those with certificates or degrees. The California Employment Development
Department predicts by 2016 a large employment growth of 19.6% in openings for preschool
teachers, and a very large growth of 32.3% for special education teachers in preschool and
kindergarten. (Source: Labor Market Info www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov)
Necessary Education & Skills for Career Success

Computer Aided Design
Computer Systems Security
Engineers, designers and drafters commonly rely a great deal on computer-aided design
(CAD) technology. Designers and engineers research, develop, design, manufacture and test
tools, engines, machines and other mechanical devices, including computer hardware. Career
opportunities exist in production operations in manufacturing, research and development,
agriculture, maintenance or technical sales. Drafters prepare technical plans and drawings used
in production of parts, tools, machinery, models, etc. CAD systems are used to create and store
the component and assembly 3D models and generate 2D drawings and plans. This electronic
information can then be viewed, manipulated, revised, printed and reused.
Ongoing threats to computer networks where valuable private information is stolen or
networks are impaired mean the demand for security professionals should grow over the
next decade. Security professionals identify risks, contain attacks on the system and prevent
the loss of sensitive information. People in this field implement and maintain security tools
in the detection, notification and isolation of issues that affect security. Enterprise security
professionals work can involve the creation and documentation of a security policy, the
examination of current industry threats and risks, and the planning of a disaster recovery
program. According to a study by the Godbe Research Group that evaluated demand for
security professionals, four occupations are expected to have large growth in Silicon Valley:
Network Engineer/Architect, Database Security Engineer, Data Security Analyst and Security
Software Engineer.
Necessary Education & Skills for Career Success
Experience using current CAD systems is essential for employment in fields such as design
and engineering. A background in mathematics and scientific principles is important for
those performing engineering and design work. Traits that help engineers to succeed are
inquisitiveness, analytical thinking, creativity and attention to details. They should be able to
work with a team and communicate orally and in writing. Individuals planning a career using
CAD systems should possess good sketching and drawing abilities that they can apply with the
CAD application.
Certificates & Degree Offered
De Anza College’s CAD program is highly regarded for its expert instruction and quality range
of courses. Two certificates and an associate degree are offered. Day and evening class times are
available. Presently, AutoDesk’s AutoCAD and Inventor, PTC’s Pro/ENGINEER, SolidWorks
and Unigraphics are the CAD design packages taught in the program. See www.deanza.

Database Design
Designing databases is important work for any organization. It takes essential information
and abstract relationships and organizes them into a readily accessed system. The database
designer, developer, administrator or specialist establishes a database, improves an existing one
and defines special relationships between the pieces of information within it. The work can
involve updating, maintaining and repairing databases and improving their performance. It
may also include providing equipment and software requirement specifications to management,
controlling access to the system and training users. The California Employment Development
Department projects by 2012 the number of database administrator positions will grow by
41.9%. (Source: Labor Market Info www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov)
Necessary Education &
Skills for Career Success
To be effective as a database designer,
developer, administrator or specialist,
one needs to know the latest computer
technology well. This requires skills
in programming and using database
management systems software. Knowledge
of mathematical formulas and principles,
technical aptitude and the ability to solve
complex problems help ensure success in
this field.
Certificate Offered
De Anza College’s Computer Information
Systems Department offers a Certificate of
Achievement in Database Design with an
emphasis on working with Oracle systems.
The program includes database management
system fundamentals, SQL, PL/SQL and
performance tuning of Oracle’s RDBMs. See
