Council Donates Publications to Universities to Share
Technical Knowledge on Malaysian Timbers
The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) recently donated a compendium of specialist publications to
share technical knowledge on Malaysian timbers with architectural and design faculties of local
universities and higher-learning institutions.
Over the years, MTC has published several publications to educate users, architects, engineers,
designers, lecturers and students on the properties, applications, eco-friendly credentials and
sustainability of Malaysian timber.
Datuk Yeo Heng Hau, CEO of the Malaysian Timber Council, said that MTC donated these
publications to support the learning, teaching and research needs of the lecturers and students on
Malaysian timber as a building material.
“There is actually plenty of research and technical data on Malaysian timbers. Unfortunately, such
information was previously scattered in sources that were not generally known to the teaching
profession and the public. What we have done is to collate and organise the information for
academicians, as well as practitioners and students of architecture, engineering and design,”
explained Datuk Yeo.
The higher-learning institutions to which the publications have been donated are as follows:

Datuk Yeo met with the Deputy Dean (Academic Development & Undergraduate Programmes) of
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Professor Dr. Goi Bok Min recently, to personally hand over
the books and discuss ways in which MTC could play a bigger role in providing technical information
on Malaysian timbers for the module on building materials in their curriculum for courses like
Architecture, Engineering and Industrial Design.
Professor Dr. Goi, in thanking MTC for the donation, was pleasantly surprised to learn that MTC also
organises study programmes for lecturers to expose them to new woodworking technology and
innovative ways in which timber is used in more developed countries.
“UTAR welcomes this opportunity and will certainly support its lecturers’ participation in such
activities organised by MTC, as this will enhance our knowledge base on building materials,” added
Dr. Goi.
In a separate occasion, Dr. Veronica Ng, Deputy Dean of the School of Architecture, Building &
Design of Taylor’s University, commended the Council’s effort and admitted that comprehensive
technical information on Malaysian timber was hitherto not easy to be found, which consequently
resulted in students having less interest to study the material more deeply for their projects.
“We are pleased to have made this contact with the Council and look forward to developing
collaborative efforts to enhance our students’ understanding of timber as a building material,” she
added. [End]
