Common Core Aligned Lesson Plan
Subject: Geometry
Unit: Right Triangles and Trigonometric Relationships
Week: 11
Teacher: Mr. Ives
Grade:
10-11
Day: 1
Rocinante High School
LESSON ELEMENT: Angles of Elevation and Depression
STUDENT-FRIENDLY TRANSLATION
Common Core Learning Standards Addressed:
G-CO.13, G-SRT.05, G-SRT.06 Understand that by similarity, side ratios in right triangles are
properties of the angles in the triangle, leading to definitions of trigonometric ratios for acute
angles.
G-SRT.07 Explain and use the relationship between the sine and the cosine of complementary angles.
G-SRT-.08
Learning Goals and Objectives: (What will students know & be able
to do as a result of this lesson?)
The students will be able to identify angles of elevation and
depression and find missing sides of triangles in real-world
problems.
I can solve indirect
measurement problems.
Vocabulary Support: (What vocabulary will student need for this
lesson?)
right triangle, angle of elevation, angle of depression,
trigonometric ratio, sine, cosine, tangent, and indirect measure.
I understand the vocabulary
of trigonometry.
Formative Assessment Criteria for Success: (What does success on
this lesson’s outcomes look like?)
The student will correctly solve real-world indirect measurement
problems involving both angles of elevation and angles of
depression.
The student will complete the assignment with a rubric of 7 or
higher.
All notes and diagrams will be complete in their data folder.
I will solve real-world
indirect measurement
problems.
Activities/Tasks: (What learning experiences will students engage in?)
Focus activity: Name one thing you know about comets!
Video of appropriate science and technology (time permitting)
Presentation of angles of elevation and depression.
Guided practice of angles of elevation and depression.
Independent practice of angles of elevation and depression.
In class formative assessment (time permitting)

 Does this lesson reflect one of the Common Core shifts in instruction (See: Common Core Shifts
EngageNY.org)
 In addition, please choose ONE question below to respond to after you have taught the lesson
OR create your own question and respond to it after you have taught the lesson.
1. How did this lesson support 21st Century Skills?
2. How did this lesson reflect academic rigor?
3. How did this lesson cognitively engage students?
4. How did this lesson engage students in cooperative learning and cooperative learning skills?
5. How effective was the work in this lesson?
Common Core Aligned Lesson:
Reflection
+ I used the resource that has the problems, but not the pictures. It's important to have the students draw the
pictures and label them correctly.
- Watch for students who have difficulty with abstract ability.
∆ This is yet another lesson that I would like to have more time to teach. Another day of practice would definitely help.
