Chemistry Can Be Pun Fun
Name:
Per:
Objective: This activity is designed to help you become familiar with the elements and the symbols found on the
periodic table.
Directions: With a wild imagination and a flair for pun, you will be able to use the names of many of the elements to
take the place of other words or phrases. Some are very straight forward, but many require quite a stretch
of the imagination. So get out your periodic table, fire up your imagination, and have fun! The first two
have been done to get you going.

5. Fantastic “New” Compounds….
Washington, D.C. – Chem Matters Magazine has obtained a bizarre research report describing a previously
“unknown” class of compounds made by a new principle of chemical synthesis. One “newly” discovered
compound, which contains the elements indium (In) and potassium (K), can be used in ballpoint pens.
Remarkable, its formula is InK! The “formulas” of other compounds were not revealed, but you can derived them
from their chemical composition. Write the “formulas” below. (Hint: You will have to look up the element’s symbols
to write the “formulas”.)
a. A pen to hold ink can be made of a compound containing one part bismuth and
one part carbon.
b. A compound with equal parts tin, oxygen, and boron that does not mix with other
substances.
c. A mineral of three elements aluminum, sulfur, and phosphorus is found in a major
mountain range.
d. The compound containing lithium, phosphorus, and sulfur forms a structure that
enables someone to kiss.

chromium and one part americium.
g. Bromine, iodine, carbon, and potassium are found in this material that is used to
build houses.
h. This compound which was banned by the church, contains one part nitrogen and
one part silicon.
i. A compound of one part potassium, one part nickel, and one part iron penetrates
many other substances.

gallium.
k. Tungsten, rhenium, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen in equal parts can form a
useful tool.
l. This compound – one part aluminum, one part molybdenum, and one part
neodymium – makes a very nutty substance.
m. Equal parts of carbon, oxygen, calcium, cobalt, and lanthanum will make a tasty
