Eligibility

Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) – Mandatory Common CV submission

Independent Researcher

 Autonomous regarding research activities

 Holds an academic or research appointment

Responsible for the proposed activities

Administrative and financial responsibility for the grant

Principal Applicants – Mandatory Common CV submission

Independent Researcher

Shares responsibility with the NPA for the direction of the proposed activities

 Co-applicants (one of the following) – Mandatory Common CV submission

 An independent researcher or a knowledge user or a trainee (undergrad / grad student, postdoc, post-health professional degree)

Contribute to the proposed activities

 Collaborators – Common CV not required

 Provide a specific service (e.g., access to equipment, training in a specialized technique, statistical analysis, access to a patient population, etc.)

• Since September 15, 2011, the Tri-Council agencies existing regulations on min/max stipend levels paid to trainees (students and postdocs) from grants no longer apply

• Compensation for research staff and research trainees should be in accordance with the rates/practices used in your Department or Faculty

• Non-discretionary benefits can also be requested

 Budget module value in the “Equipment” line must be $0

CIHR defines Research Equipment as:

Any item (or interrelated collection of items comprising a system) of non-expendable tangible property, having a useful life of more than 1 year and a cost of $2,000 or more, which is used wholly or in part for research.

 Note: all three conditions must be met for an item to be considered equipment

 To be considered materials or supplies an item must meet only one of the following conditions:

• expendable tangible property; or,

• useful life of 1 year or less; or

• a cost of less than $2,000.

For example, a laptop computer that costs less than $2,000 would be considered "materials or supplies" and therefore can be requested under that budget heading

Budget Justification:

 Ensure amounts given in justification are consistent with values listed in budget detail module, and that all requests are fully justified

Cost Quotations / Cost Support Letters

 For service contracts costing more than $10,000 and up to $25,000 attach at least one cost quotation;

 For single service contracts costing more than $25,000, attach to the quote a letter from the Authorized Official at the Institution Paid attesting that the service contract is not currently available, plus at least two competitive quotes.
