AP Physics B

Syllabus

Course Description

The AP Physics B course is designed to stand in the place of the Physics 101 offered at universities and colleges. The content taught in this course as well as the expectations of this course are the same as those found in colleges across the nation. In May, students are encouraged to take an AP exam to demonstrate their collegiate knowledge of physics. Passing this exam can provide students with 3 hours of college credit in the physics disciplines. Students are also encouraged to submit their lab notebooks from this course to their universities to earn an additional 1 hour of laboratory credit.

Fees

$89- AP Exam (Charged by the College Board)

Grading

This course categorizes assignments into three categories: tests, daily, and exams. The following grading scale is applied to these assignments:

Tests: 50%

Daily: 30%

Exams: 20%

The tests for AP Physics B are compiled from a test bank of past AP Physics tests. They are designed to mimic the exam that will be taken in May. As a result, there is a time limit given in each section- multiple choice and free response.

Labs

Inquiry-Based Labs are a key component to AP Physics, and the skills necessary to conduct a lab independently are found on the AP Exam. The AP Board expects students in this course to have completed 12 formal labs and to have 12 formal lab reports by the end of the course. These lab reports have the opportunity to earn students an extra hour of credit in college if they pass the exam. As a result, this course has 15 formal labs built-in to its coursework. Students are required to write 12 formal lab reports based on these 15 labs. However, if a student chooses to write all 15 lab reports, he or she will receive an extra test grade based on their additional work.

Assignments & Make-Up Work

A formal calendar for the course can be found at the end of this syllabus. This calendar includes the topics we will be covering as well as the due dates for assignments. All assignments are due by 3:45 PM on their due date. Standard School Make-Up policies apply. Late work will be accepted up to 2 days past the deadline; however, the assignment’s grade drops a letter grade for each day it is late.

Tutoring

Due to the rigor of this course, I offer my AP students 3 separate opportunities for tutoring throughout the week- in the morning before school, during 4 th lunch, and during 4 th block. During these tutoring sessions, students are encouraged to work on their homework assignments and correct their previous tests. Extra credit is provided to those students who opt to come in and make corrections to their Unit tests.

AP Physics B Tutoring Sessions:

4 th Lunch

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during 4 th

lunch are reserved for AP Physics students as a 25 minute tutoring session.

Before School Starting 7:50 AM – 8:15 AM

Due to various club meetings, my morning tutoring schedule varies from week to week. Below is a calendar of tutoring dates. These dates are open to all of my classes.
