Geography
1. Describe the location of Canada and Mexico using compass directions and relative location (example:
Canada is located west of _____________)
Canada is north of the United States.
Mexico is south of the United States.
2. Describe the location of the Gulf of Mexico using compass directions and relative location.
The Gulf of Mexico is south of Texas and east of Mexico. It is a border for both Mexico and the United States.
3. Why are most major Canadian cities located in the south?
Because the further north you go, the colder it gets, most Canadian cities were established close to the border with
the United States.
4. Describe the causes and effects of urbanization in the US.
Cause: People migrated from rural areas (farms) to cities for work.
Effect: Urban areas (cities) grew larger as more people moved to them.
History
1. Where did democracy originate? How did the idea spread from Europe to North America?
Greece; European settlers (especially the British/English) brought their ideas of government to North America.
2. Compare and contrast the histories of Canada and the US.
The US was colonized mainly by the British and Spanish.
Canada was colonized mainly by the British and French.
Both of the nations have a history of immigration which has helped them become multi-cultural societies.
Government
1. Describe characteristics of governments ruled by one, few, and many. Give examples of countries for each
type.
Rule by one: one leader, unlimited government, dictatorship, North Korea
Rule by few: a small group of leaders, unlimited government, Communist party, China
Rule by many: ruled by the citizens, limited government, Democracy, United States and Canada.
2. How does limiting the power of government affect the economic system of a society?
When the power is limited in the government, the citizens have more choices and rights. This includes citizen
control of the economy. The citizens get to make economic decisions like who to sell to/buy from, what jobs they
want to have, and whether or not they would like to own private property like starting a business.
3. What is the purpose of a constitution? How does it affect the power of government/leaders? How does it
affect the rights of the people?
A constitution lists the rights of the citizens and limits the power of the government. These are used in limited
governments.
4. Why is being an active participant in government an important responsibility of US citizens?
Governments such as a Democratic Republic (the US) require active participation (voting) from citizens in order to
remain a limited government.
Economy
1. What are some examples of alternative energy sources? How do you think these new energies can help
society?
Wind powers, solar power, and bio-fuels. They can provide sustained energy for larger societies as energy demands
grow.
2. What are the characteristics of the following types of economies:
a. Communism- the government controls the factors of production and answers all of the economic
questions. No private property is allowed. There is no profit motive.
b. Free Market (free enterprise)- the citizens control the factors of production and answer the
economic questions. Private property and competition are encouraged.
3. Define the following terms:
a. Retail- sells tangible goods to customers.
b. Manufacturing- makes tangible products to sell to wholesale industry.
c. Service- provides a service (intangible) such as a doctor, lawyer or teacher.
d. Intangible- a service that cannot be touched, it is something that is done for someone, it is an idea.
Examples include getting a haircut, using a bank or going to a hospital.
e. Tangible- a product can be touched and bought through retail industry. Examples include shoes,
cars, and electronics.
Culture
1. How did the French affect the development of Canada?
The French settled a portion of Canada and brought their language and culture with them. They spread their culture
and now there is a strong culture region of the French in Canada.
2. How does immigration affect the development of a society?
Immigration creates a multicultural society.
