There never was a generation of the

Marion G. Romney
Conference Report, October 1966
I hope we are all familiar with these words of the
Lord and with his predictions concerning other
coming events, such as the building of the new
Jerusalem and the redemption of the old, the
return of Enoch's Zion, and Christ's millennial
reign. Not only do I hope that we are familiar
with these coming events; I hope also that we
keep the vision of them continually before our
minds. This I do because upon a knowledge of
them, and an assurance of their reality and a
witness that each of us may have part therein,
rests the efficacy of Christ's admonition, “be not
troubled.”

Purposes of Prophecy
Peace of Mind
Why is it that the Latter-day Saints are perfectly
calm and serene among all the convulsions of the
earth--the turmoils, strife, war, pestilence,
famine, and distress of nations? It is because the
spirit of prophecy has made known to us that
such things would actually transpire upon the
earth. We understand it, and view it in its true
light. We have learned it by the visions of the
Almighty.

Purposes of Prophecy
So We Can Prepare and Repent
I know these are unpleasant things. It is not a
pleasant thing even for me to stand here and tell
you that this is written in the scriptures. If the
Lord has a controversy with the nations, He will
put them to the sword. Their bodies shall lie
unburied like dung upon the earth. That is not
nice, is it, but should we not know it? Is it not
our duty to read these things and understand
them? (continued)

Purposes of Prophecy
So We Can Prepare and Repent
Don’t you think the Lord has given us these
things that we might know and we might prepare
ourselves through humility, through repentance,
through faith, that we might escape from these
dreadful conditions that are portrayed by these
ancient prophets? That is why I am reading
them. I feel just as keenly as you do about the
condition, and I pray for it to come to an end,
but I want it to come to an end right.

Orson F. Whitney
Conference Report, April 1920
Saturday Evening of Time
According to our Prophet's teachings, God gave
to this planet, Mother Earth, seven thousand
years as the period of "its temporal existence;"
and four thousand years, or four of those great
days, had passed before Christ was crucified,
while nearly two thousand years, or two more
days, have gone by since. Consequently, we
stand at the present moment in the Saturday
Evening of Time, near the close of the sixth day,
at the week's end of human history. Morning will
break upon the Millennium, the thousand years
of peace, the Sabbath of the World.

A. We are to understand that it contains the
revealed will, mysteries, and the works of
God; the hidden things of his economy
concerning this earth during the seven
thousand years of its continuance, or its
temporal existence.

A. We are to understand that as God made the world in six
days, and on the seventh day he finished his work, and
sanctified it, and also formed man out of the dust of the
earth, even so, in the beginning of the seventh thousand
years will the Lord God sanctify the earth, and complete
the salvation of man, and judge all things, and shall
redeem all things, except that which he hath not put into
his power, when he shall have sealed all things, unto the
end of all things; and the sounding of the trumpets of the
seven angels are the preparing and finishing of his work, in

preparing of the way before the time of his coming.

Can the Lord Return
Today?
Judah must return, Jerusalem must be rebuilt, and the
temple, and water come out from under the temple, and
the waters of the Dead Sea be healed. It will take some
time to rebuild the walls of the city and the temple, Etc.;
and all this must be done before the Son of Man will make
his appearance. There will be wars and rumors of wars,
signs in the heavens above and on the earth beneath, the
sun turned into darkness and the moon to blood,
earthquakes in divers places, the seas heaving beyond
their bounds; then will appear one grand sign of the Son of
Man in heaven. But what will the world do? They will say it
is a planet, a comet, etc. But the Son of Man, which will be
as the light of the morning cometh out of the east.

Can the Lord Return
Today?
The people called Millerites, believe in the second coming
of the Savior, and they have set a great many days when it
should take place. But he did not come; and he never will
come until the revelations of God are fulfilled and a people
are prepared for his coming. He will never come until the
Jews are gathered home and have re-built their Temple
and city, and the Gentiles have gone up there to battle
against them. He will never come until his Saints have built
up Zion, and have fulfilled the revelations which have been
spoken concerning it. He will never come until the Gentiles
throughout the whole Christian world have been warned by
the inspired elders of Israel.

There is a real sifting going on in the Church,
and it is going to become more pronounced with
the passing of time. It will sift the wheat from
the tares, because we face some difficult days,
the like of which we have never experienced in
our lives. And those days are going to require
faith and testimony and family unity, the like of
which we have never had. We must prepare for
the great day of the Lord. This preparation must
consist of more than just casual membership in
the Church. We must be guided by personal
revelation and the counsel of the living prophet
so that we will not be deceived.
