Billings Christian School Strategic Plan - July 2013 - Draft Summary Billings Christian School has very strong support from current families, staff, and some alumni. These families are extremely faithful to Billings Christian School due to the Christ-centered curriculum, strong academics, and the family environment. Our main challenge is lack of community awareness or misunderstood awareness. With the recent and projected growth in west Billings, Billings Christian School is located in a prime location. However, that location is shared with Cornerstone Community Church. This cause Billings Christian School to be overshadowed and causes confusion about our relation with CCC. Our enrollment increased 37% this past year from an enrollment in 2011-12 of 132 to an enrollment in 201213 of 182. Enrollment for 2013-14 is anticipated to be at 215 (another 18% increase). These increases in enrollment have stretched our facilities capacity. We have low enrollment in some classes (5th & 6th grades have under 10 students) but some classes are reaching our limit of 20 students (1st, 2nd, and 10th ). As we expand elective offerings and add full-day Kindergarten options, we have limited options to add classroom space. Within the next two years, we will be in need of additional classrooms if we plan to continue to grow our enrollment and opportunities for our students. We have begun a rebranding process to assist in our community awareness. The resulting image will be consistently communicated with current families, prospective families, churches, and staff. We will take this image to the public through targeted marketing. We will start a concerted effort to communicate with alumni during this process to develop a mailing list. Grandparents (contact information has been collected with online enrollment process) will also be a targeted group to build awareness and support for future facility needs. Our students are our most important treasure. We will look for ways to give all students ways to excel at Billings Christian School. By expanding our elective options, we will be able to add opportunities to excel in art and music. Currently students have many opportunities to excel in athletics and academics. There will be also opportunities for our high school students to tutor elementary students. Community service opportunities will be expanded for our students. With very low teacher turnover, our teachers are extremely loyal to Billings Christian School. Professional development training will be offered in an intentional manner and schedule. We increased our teacher’s base pay to $20,000 for the 2013-14 school year from $16,088. This new base pay will be 56% of our local school district’s starting teacher’s salary. We plan to increase this base pay each year until we reach 70% of the public school’s base. Technology will be improved during 2013 in the classroom with improved internet connections, new smartboard installation, along with new laptops and printers for teachers. Our intent is to provide teachers sufficient training, technology, and support to exceptionally teach our children. Each of these areas of growth opportunities will be approached through the lens of Christ. Prayerful guidance will be sought in all plans. Board members, administration, and committees will be utilized to maximize input and expertise within these groups. Vision Statement Vision Statement Grounded in Biblical truth and academic excellence, we teach, train, and mentor individuals for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service. Mission Statement Providing superior Christian education consistent with Biblical principles, we partner with families and their churches to equip students for a lifetime pursuit of excellence and integrity under the Lordship of Christ. Within a safe, loving, and enriching environment, students will discover their individual gifts and talents; develop intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and physically; and impact the world through their leadership, integrity, and Biblical worldview. Core Values Word of God is the standard from which we acknowledge absolute truth in developing all policies, programs, and services. Achievement of excellence is our goal. Rooted in Christ, we model a vibrant and dynamic personal relationship with Him. Raising the bar to a much higher level than what society requires or values, we support and partner with parents and their churches in training and instructing children for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service. Investing in the lives of others is our hallmark. Ordinary is not in our vocabulary. Everyone is valued and uniquely created in the image of God. Recognizing God’s presence and power, we strive for integrity, honesty, and transparency in our lives. Spirit driven, we are called to serve others, give selflessly, and exemplify good stewardship in order to honor God and benefit others. Statement of Faith The School is not affiliated with any specific denomination. Our statement of faith subscribes to the following declaration of the National Association of Evangelicals: We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful people, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is essential. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Mission Statement Uniqueness of Billings Christian School: Only non-denominational Christian PreK-12 school in Billings Only single campus Christian PreK-12 school in Billings Individual class sizes limited at 20 students (average current class size is 13) Core competencies: Christ-centered PreK-12 education Dedicated teachers Challenging academics Students seeking to serve Families committed to Christian education Serve all economic strata equally Serve diverse faith denominations Athletic opportunities for all students Accredited through ACSI & AdvancED Teachers certified through ACSI Low teacher turnover Strong donor support through annual fundraising event Community service opportunities for students Weaknesses Lack of community awareness Misinformation in community No alumni communication Lack of leadership opportunities for students Lack of intentional interaction between high school & elementary students Minimal professional development opportunities for teachers Traffic increasing on Grand Ave. & increased enrollment increasing parking lot congestion The school shares space with Cornerstone Community Church. The church building is much more visible than the school. 3 Mission Statement Threats New Christian Montessori school a few blocks away Plans for new public schools in this area of town Opportunities As of 2012, Billings (zip 59106)'s population is 12,341 people. Since 2000, this area has had a population growth of 57.43 percent. Ensure they are a part of our vision and believe it. We increased on our teacher base pay to $20,000 (from $16,000) in 2013-14 Develop a Facility Plan to expand & update facility to meet needs of growing student population. Our Foundation Board members are evaluating facility options Utilizing a modular for short-term needs Alex Tommerup, our school board president & architect is looking at the cost of this option plus city requirements and estimated time frame Purchasing the Cornerstone Community Church building Foundation board members are meeting with Pastor Jeff and church elders to explore this option Purchasing land from Cornerstone Community Church in exchange for additional classrooms built for our use (option proposed by CCC) Foundation board members are meeting with Pastor Jeff and church elders to explore this option Exercising our option to purchase & finish the gym space within Cornerstone Community Church (we have an option to purchase the space for $1) The cost of this project will be evaluated along with the potential complications of only owning a portion of the building Mission Statement 7 Build a new facility on existing property Further discussion will be based on results of discussions with Cornerstone Community Church Build a new facility in a new location Further discussion will be based on results of discussions with Cornerstone Community Church Expand technology tools available to teachers to improve their effectiveness. With funding from families and our foundation, we are able to purchase a minimum of five Pormethean Smartboards to add to our classrooms. We plan to purchase Chromebooks for our teachers. With remaining funds, we plan to purchase 10 IPads for the elementary students. Their use will be coordinated by our Technology Teacher. In 2014-15, we plan to partner with our High School families in the purchase of Chromebooks for our High School students. Train and develop staff to ensure continued effectiveness. Encourage all teacher participation in NEXUS Live 2013 Encourage all teachers to utilize the ConNexus continuing education courses Provide technology training prior to the start of school in all new technology purchased (Pormethean boards and Chromebooks are planned) Involve parents in the success and future vision of Billings Christian School. Parents will be encouraged to volunteer A survey will be sent to all parents in July 2013 to determine their interest, time available, & areas of expertise We will slowly add volunteers where help is needed (guidelines and followup will need to part of this process) Existing committees will be made aware of parents with expertise in the areas needed Expand Bible classes as qualified teachers are available. A desire by parents for additional Bible courses at the High School level will be explored as qualified teachers/Pastors are identified Continue grant writing process to request additional funding for scholarships to continue to assist lower income families in attending Billings Christian School. A Grant Writer was retained by our Foundation in March 2013 for the purpose of building relationships with foundations in the hope that additional sources of funding will be made available Continue to look for community service opportunities. During 2012-13 our student served at the Community Garden, St. Vincent Thrift Store, Goodwill, Mothers of Preschoolers, Special Olympics, Zoo Montana, Mission Statement Rescue Mission, and area retirement centers. We will continue to look for more of these opportunities for all age groups. Look at feasibility for bussing and satellite classrooms. We have been approached by Community & Leadership Development, Inc. to consider the option of opening a satellite campus in the Friendship House. They currently offer preschool programs but would like to expand to all elementary grades. We want to look into transportation funding options to provide transportation from outlying areas: Billings Heights, Lockwood, Laurel, Downtown/Southside Recruit teacher or individual to develop a before school care program. We have approached a current teacher to consider expanding her ministry into our before school care program. This would allow parents to deliver their students to school up to 50 minutes prior to the beginning of the school day. This teacher would assist with homework if necessary, provide a basic breakfast if necessary, and ensure the safety of these students. Recruit teacher or individual to develop after school program for Jr. High/High School students. We are prayerfully asking God to lead us to a mentor to fulfill this role. Develop feasibility plan for full day preschool as expanded facility is available. During the 2013-14 school year we will look into regulation requirements in preparation for future daycare. A feasibility plan will be completed when a facilities plan is in place. The Vision Statement, Mission Statement and Core Values were presented as the basis for any decisions that are made. They are listed below. Then we began the discussion and prioritized the wants, needs and desires that were expressed in a response to questionnaires from the school into immediate goals, 5 year goals and 10 year plus goals. They are listed in order of priority with numbering system based on the ‘votes’ from those who attended. Immediate Goals: 12.3.2 – Gymnasium for BCS 11.1 – Marketing 7 – Coordinator for Extra Curricular 5 – More Resources (IEP-Special Help) 4.2 – More HS Electives 4 – More Classrooms 3.2 – Update Curriculum 3 – Grand Av Ingress/Egress Safety 3 – Technology Classes 2.1.1 - Staff (More Teachers) 2 – Summer Programs 1.3 – Guidance Counselor 1.1.1 – More Better Bible Classes 1.1 – Bussing 1.1 – Science Lab 1 – Music, Band, Orchestra, Choral 1 – Grant Writer 1 – Longer Lunches 1 – Lower Tuition 1 - Drama 5 Year Goals: 2.2 – Creative Arts: Drama, Music, Speaking, Writing, Art, Debate, Home Econ 1.2 – Satellite Campus 1.2 – Update Building 1 – Concerts 1 – Business Professionals of America 1 – Full Day Preschool 1 – Nutrition 10 Year Goals: 2 – Financial Class 2 – Larger Lockers 1 – Trainer/Nurses Room 1 – School Garden Other items discussed: Extra Curricular: BB, Football, Volleyball, PE, Locker Room, Weight Room, Photography, Missions Trips, Booster Club continuity, Track & Field, Golf, FFA, Christian Quiz, Science Fair, Tennis, Baseball, Soccer, Equestrian, Rodeo, Shooting, National Honor/Academic, Auto Shop, Home Repair, Wood Working. 9 Mission Statement Billings Christian School Strategic Planning Results We then discussed some of the ideas for the master plan. We decided that many of the goals are dependent on facilities. It was urged that we grab a hold of God’s vision for the facilities and pray that way. We discussed the following vision options: 1 – Purchase CCC 2 – Building new 3 – Sell & move 4 – Start satellite school 5 – Partner with a church We also discussed the following financing options: 1 - Capital Campaign 2 – Bonds 3 – Grant writer 4 – Land donation On Friday morning, May 24th, the Strategic Planning Committee met. We discussed the Immediate Needs Items and eliminated those that were already done. The after some deliberation we concluded that we would select a vision to build a gym with locker rooms and four classrooms as the first phase of our master plan. We also felt very strong that we needed more land, but that would not necessarily be the first phase but we would love it to be. The cost for the first phase of the building and parking would be in the range of 1.5 to $1.6 million dollars if we keep it fairly austere. Proverbs 16:19, paraphrased, says that we make the plans and God will guide our footsteps. We are going to use this as our vision until God changes our plan for the first phase. We also believe in prayer and that this whole process needs to be covered with prayer. Asking the prayer warriors who are affiliated and empathetic to what we do, to pray for the aspects of this process including this vision, financial, etc. The question was asked why are we doing these immediate needs items. Our committee divided the task of tying the Vision and Ministry Statements to each item. Here are the answers to why we would want to do each item: Gymnasium for BCS – A gym would be a multi-use space in order to fulfill the mission and ministry of BCS for the student’s physical development & as a cafeteria, for spiritual and intellectual development as additional classroom space & extracurricular activities such as choral, drama/plays, music. Marketing – A necessary mechanism to partner with families and churches. Coordinator for Extra Curricular – Exposure to many different activities will help students to discover their individual gifts and talents; develop intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and physically; and impact the world through their leadership, integrity, and Biblical worldview. More Resources (IEP-Individualized Education Program - Special Help) – Much like Extra Curricular, more resources will help students to discover their individual gifts and talents; develop intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and physically; and impact the world through their leadership, integrity, and Biblical worldview. More HS Electives - Our students and families would like our school to have additional educational opportunities available. Lack of classroom space is the biggest limiting factor. More Classrooms - as our student enrollment increases along with our need for more elective options for JH/HS, we have a need for additional classrooms to meet these needs. 10 Mission Statement There is an urgent demand for more classrooms at BCS. We have many parents and students who desire for us to teach upper level music, band and choir but because there is not a classroom large enough to teach them, they cannot be offered. We would like to expand our math and science department but lack of space limits us. We really need an up to date science lab equipped with the proper technology for chemistry, biology and physics labs. We have local youth pastors who are willing to teach a variety of additional Bible course if we had a room to put them in. Some other courses we would like to add are speech and drama (gymnasium with permanent or portable stage would be required). We could also expand our physical education program from bottom to top with a gymnasium. We also have had a number of students interested in vocational classes. Some were able to get enrolled but others could not at the Tech Center. Space is limited there. It seems that every new family looking at BCS has questions concerning some if not all of these course offerings. I believe our enrollment would increase even more quickly with a gymnasium, locker room, foyer and four classrooms. Paul Waggoner, Principal Update Curriculum - as funding is available, we would like to purchase updated versions of textbooks. Grand Av Ingress/Egress Safety - as our student population increases, our traffic into and out of our parking lot also increases. It is normal to have cars backed up to the entrance as they are dropping off children in the morning. We do not want to stop traffic on Grand as families enter our parking lot. In addition, general traffic on Grand has increased this year. Technology Classes - expanding these offerings is a desire of our students and families. Our teachers would like more training on new technology available. Staff (More Teachers) - It is part of our Vision to teach, train, and mentor individuals for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service. Despite teacher’s best efforts to provide all the support every student needs, it is not always possible to provide the support every student needs all the time. If more staff were available, these students could receive the individualized education that may be necessary for them to succeed in some academic areas. Summer Programs - Many students already spend much of their summer in daycare. Providing a summer program parents could utilize would enable Billings Christian School to continue developing within these students the Biblical Worldview we are already striving for, while at the same time providing a safe, loving, and enriching environment. Summer programs could also provide extra support for students who struggle academically and need an extra boost before starting the next grade. Guidance Counselor - It is part of our Mission Statement to equip students for a lifetime pursuit of excellence and integrity under the Lordship of Christ. A guidance counselor on staff would help to equip students with information and opportunities available to them post-high school (Colleges or Universities of interest, scholarship, etc…). A guidance counselor could also help prepare students for entering college or the workforce post-high school and make suggestions as to the best course-path to take in preparation for life beyond high school. More/Better Bible Classes - this could be developed in partnership with youth pastors. Bussing - we would like to expand our community outreach by providing bussing services from downtown, heights, and Laurel. This service would increase our student body but, more importantly, provide a service to our families. Science Lab - provide expanded lab facilities to students. 11 Mission Statement Music, Band, Orchestra, Choral - “It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, Psalm 92:1-3 Grant Writer - as Jeromy ends his five month commitment with our school, we will need someone with grant expertise to follow-up with these initial contacts and continue building relationships. Drama - Many students attending Billings Christian School have expressed a desire for a drama program. A drama program could provide students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills while at the same time developing individual gifts and talents they could use throughout their lives in ministry and evangelism. Our plan of action is to begin to implement or prepare to implement the above list where possible. The additional classrooms and the gymnasium project will be a phase one vision that will be displayed in a site plan, floor plan and 3D model in order to present it to God and His people to pray for and prepare for His answer on how He wants to make this a reality. The BSYEF will be presented with this vision for their wisdom on how we will work together in response to God’s direction. Respectfully submitted, The Strategic Planning Committee: Trent Hickes, Janine Teske, Bo Wagner, Paul Waggoner, Diann Floth, Sue Lucas, Alex Tommerup 12 BCS Parents Survey for Strategic Planning Committee - February 2013 BCS Parents Survey for Strategic Planning Committee - February 2013 36 responses 1. Please check all that best describe your relationship with Billings Christian Schools. Your child(ren) have been at BCS for 5+ years. Your child(ren) have been at BCS for 2-4 years. This is your first year at BCS. Our child(ren) are in the BCS Preschool program. Our child(ren) are in K-6 grades. Our child(ren) are in Jr. High. Our child(ren) are in High School. 14 families 17 families 5 families 1 family 14 families 7 families 11 families 2. What one thing BCS does better than the last school your child(ren) attended? Or if you have not attended another school, what one thing stands out about BCS? Small classrooms with teachers who truly care about their students. BCS is a safer environment for kids because it is smaller and can be more personal with families if an issue were to arise with a child. My girls love it. Goal is to develop Godly young people. Pursuit of Christian values Teaching staff Students are taught Christian values and proper behavior expectations. Better teacher/parent communication. Timely notifications on poor grade performance I appreciate the smaller class sizes, and the genuine caring the teachers demonstrate. They teach things from a Christian perspective. The Godly atmosphere, small classrooms!! Excellent teachers and good student to teacher ratio Teach a Biblical worldview. Highest standard for academics, Tolerance for differences Here teachers are concerned about the spiritual growth and practice of the children. I admire the teachers for the people they are and the love and concern they show. BCS has some master teachers. JESUS!!! BCS is Christ centered! The Christian based education without worldly influence BCS is Christ centered. One thing that stands out is the students. Their behavior is incredible! We were in a public school and it was over crowded and we didn't feel that the teachers cared. You can talk about GOD!! There is a religious and family feeling about the school. We love the Christian world view emphasis and the curriculum. My kids love the school and their teachers. The quality of teachers is excellent, and the environment is more of family relationships rather than a distant student-teacher relationship. I think the teachers truly care about the students. Enforce the rules The outstanding teachers & how they work with each child individually & with parents to make sure the child is succeeding. BCS does a fantastic job of integrating Biblical teaching with the normal educational curriculum. The staff and faculty genuinely care about our children's success in academics and spiritual matters. It shows in the time and effort they put in with our children. Academics with a Christian world view We have found comfort in the fact that BCS has similar foundations in spiritual, educational, and discipline as we do at home. Also to have God be at the center of conflicts, celebrations, etc. is just awesome. Christian education. The focus on a Bible based education and a love of Christ. They teach from a biblical perspective and the classes are more challenging. Try hard to keep the learning environment safe. My favorite thing about BCS is the way Mr. and Mrs. Waggoner model marriage to our kids. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. W.!!! Christ centered education They strive to work with your children and not just count them as another number in their school. The staff is extremely helpful and encouraging, and they give me the impression that they truly care about my daughter's education and well being. I, mean, I got a call on a Saturday to just see how my daughter was adjusting to the new school. That has never happened before. I was extremely touched by that gesture. 13 BCS Parents Survey for Strategic Planning Committee - February 2013 3. If you could change one thing about BCS, what would that be? A better science program in high school. Science should be hands on and cause the children to be interested. Because of how the room is set up our teacher is limited to what he can do and the education is lost. We also could use more options for classes on high school but the same teachers shouldn't have to teach them . I believe their plates are full as it is. Improve campus with a gym and build a stronger sports program. ("And they will come") the buildings need updated More electives Need a gym. Four day week schedule with Fridays off would be great for sports. High school students miss a lot of class time traveling, Survey students for feedback on teacher interactions I miss some of the programs public school have like band, orchestra and gifted talented programs. To have their own gym. Offer reduced or free lunches for families in need. Getting rid of king James or the NKJ as preferred translations Maybe have one designated Bible teacher, instead of the individual teachers teaching Bible. Id like to see cooking/sewing/shop like the jr highs. My son says bigger lockers I would like to see our schoool's rules remain rooted in common sense, and a biblical understanding of evil. The gun policy of the world should not have to be our own. No one needs to be afraid of a picture of a gun, or toy guns, or children playing cops and robbers. Also, it seems there is a struggle to find the time to teach science and history subjects. Since it seemsto be the case, I would prefer Spanish take a back seat to core subjects. Can't think of anything right now...but a new building would be nice when all the money comes in to build a new school. More extra circular activies; playing instrument, drama class, and choir. That they had a gym. Nothing we love it. Nothing!!! More consistency; stop changes to course offerings during the year when you/children expect 1 thing & get something entirely different. Our children need computer classes and other outlets for creativity at least in junior high and above, and discovering who they are/strengths. (home ec-cooking, sewing basics, art, yearbook, drama, creative writing etc.) I like the school just the way it is. Communication home from teachers and the school could be clearer. Bible classes in the curriculum should be greatly expanded, maybe to two classes per day for all grades. It's the most important subject and should take priority over all other classes. Kids leaving BCS should have a solid education in doctrine and apologetics. I think now bible is only taught in the high school two or three times per week. Build a gym It would be nice to have a "band" class that kids can learn to play instruments. Having our own gym would be fantastic too. I know several families that only looked at price when considering private education, so they selected Trinity. It would be great if we could match their price to be more competitive. That my child not have to have Ms. Reeves as a teacher. I think she cares about the children overall, but not sure how emotionally stable she is. Accountability in the classroom We would like to have the tuition be more affordable, especially when multiple family members attend. Also, we would like to see the staff able to be better compensated monatarily. The abundance of candy in preschool. Kids should not be rewarded with candy for good behavior. I wish we had one building with a gym and appropriate sports fields for the kids. They need to help the high school students more with direction for college and scholarships etc. I often wish there was an on-site Counselor for the kids to share what happens in the classroom in a neutral setting with options for handling the situations. Please, please, please...more bible training. Twice a day, every day. Verse memorization. Sound doctrine. Church history. Can we not step it up here? Lower tuition - At least be as low or lower than Trinity Luthern. It would be nice to be able to 'sell' our Christian friends on BCS by stating that it costs less than Trinity I have not been familiar with the school long enough to be able to inform you of anything that could be changed. 4. If you had to explain to a friend why you chose BCS for your child’s education, what would you say? Spiritual education throughout the day. Not worldly views. Kids don't have the distractions at BCS like public school. They come and can focus on their education because classes are smaller and teachers are able to assist students more one on one. We are able to keep prayer in our school and keep God first! Wanted a Christian school where God's word is taught, where educators share our values, smaller size, academically out-perform public school, able to play in sports due to school size. 14 BCS Parents Survey for Strategic Planning Committee - February 2013 Values Superior Education, caring teachers and staff My children love the small classes. No real pressure to engage in inappropriate behavior and activities. More opportunities to play sports. Wonderful Bible lessons and curriculum. The biblical teachings and that the teachers care about the students The one on one attention, safety from forced government programs ie. sex ed etc. Smaller classes for our students. Love, love, love BCS and the family atmosphere there. Also a very good education. Because they get a Christisn influence. I would say that it's not so much the religious aspect of the school but what they AREN'T getting taught or exposed to that they would be in public schools Children need to be educated from the perspective of a Biblical worldview. Why fill their minds with the perversions of the world. Quality of program, quality of teachers I didn't have the patience for homeschooling, but I still wanted my kids to have a Christian education. I also think the curriculum is solid, and my kids will get a good education. BCS's education will not try to teach my child that socialism is a higher form of government, but will actually instill patriotism. At BCS they can be educated without the humanism and lack of absolutes that permeates public school curriculum. JESUS!!! & PRAYER!!! We love that BCS has higher expectations. Our kids are receiving an excellent education and they're getting it in a loving, Christ honoring environment. Because of the biblical world view that is taught. Small classes. More attention for my son. That it is Christ centered and the environment is so positive and encouraging. Christian values. Small class size. Awesome staff and teachers:) Christian/Biblical Worldview This is NOT a public school with the problems of a public school. The kids at BCS are polite and mostly kind to one another. I would emphasize the curriculum, the caring environment, the safety for my children and the consistency that they are taught at school what they also hear at home. 1) Christian environment, 2) smaller class sizes, 3) opportunity to participate in sports, 4) role models of the teachers. The environment -- loving, supportive, caring We chose BCS because when we visited we saw the teens interacting with adults at lunch time. The teens looked them in the eye when speaking, were confident, & respectful. We saw evidence of what a great job BCS was doing in educating these kids (it's more than just book knowledge!). In the 6 years we've been at BCS we have been very impressed with the education, teachers, and the spiritual training. We wanted a truly Christ-centered education for our children with teachers who are definitely believers! Small school that leads our children in serving and honoring God in everything they do. Has the same standards we do for our children. Small classes, great fundamental academics, teachers who care about spiritual well- being of kids The world and all the involves will come soon enough. We wanted to give our kids the strongest foundation to grow before they enter the world on their own. Christian education and outmost care for my children's safety (food allergies in particular). We chose BCS for its excellent cirruculum and Biblically focuses teachings for our children in a supportive environment. It is a protected, safe, Christian environment. The kids get personal attention in their instructional needs. We chose BCS because of Mrs. Garcia and Mr. Williams. They not only are good teachers, but they exemplify great character. Christ centered education I feel my daughter's academic performance will be more beneficial in a smaller, close knit school. She will has the ability to learn alot more than what the normal school district 2 can teach her. 5. Is your family planning to continue educating your child(ren) at Billings Christian Schools? Strongly Agree 72.2% Agree 22.2% Neutral 5.6% Disagree 0% Strongly Disagree 0% 15 BCS Teacher Strategic Planning Questionnaire - February 2013 BCS Teacher Strategic Planning Questionnaire - February 2013 1 – What plan(s) has God put into your heart for the next few years at BCS? Continue to provide a quality Christian preschool experience for our preschool age children. With added space we could expand our preschool program & also provide needed before & after school care. Tutorial English for students who transfer from other schools or homeschool & need remedial help. Be who He has called me to be. Fulfill my God-given role. Progress professionally & spiritually. I would like to see a valid, organized Bible curriculum/plan carried out in the Jr. High & High School. The library needs to be open and accessible to classes. Therefore, I would need a teaching room. We need a resource program. With all my heart I would love to keep teaching & coaching volleyball at BCS. Financially, it is a real struggle. I don’t know where God is leading in the near future. To continue to teach until my children have graduated from high school. Starting a counseling program/resource room for students who are struggling. Continue to teach. More training in worship/technology. To return to full-time teaching next year in the junior high. A semester for Seniors to work an independent study in science. This would include a research project and report of their own choosing. ? At this point continue Teaching and coaching. I would like to continue to teach second grade. I would like us to have a full time resource teacher and room (or part-time). I would hope that we don’t begin full time Kindergarten, unless the afternoon was not fully academic. I feel that 5&6 year olds need to be children. I will support what the board decides, of course, but I don’t want the world to dictate to us what a 5 or 6 yr old must do. We will need more classrooms if we decide to have a full day Kindergarten, and hald day (afternoon Kindergarten). A band and an orchestra for BCS. A Music Room! One for choir, orchestra & I would also love to teach elementary again in a classroom. A resource room. I would love to teach music ½ time and resource room the other ½. I would like to know that our juniors & seniors have been prepared as much as possible for college - planning & preparation. Someone trained in this area would be great (who has time to spend with each student & who keeps up with current ideas). I would love to see our students glean a strong Christian worldview to be able to go out into the world and know true Biblical doctrine for themselves. It is my prayer that I will be teaching 3rd grade for many more years. I love teaching full time and watching the changes in the students as they grow spiritually and intellectually, as well as physically & emotionally. I thank God every day that my own children can attend BCS and I can be a part of the teaching staff. 2 – What technological changes would benefit your classroom? I’m not very up to date on all that is available for classroom use these days. I would like to try an Ipad? Not technological but I really need storage. I would love cabinets for my wall to put things in that I can use regularly. Consistently working internet Printer connected to computers for students Powerpoint ability Water cooler I would like a smartboard - if available. Develop a system where students can check on e-book material from the library. I have 2 computers in my classroom but sometimes I can’t make them work. If I knew how to make them work I would use them much more. I want wireless on my laptop. More updated computers in our classroom. Our computers that we have now are outdated and slow & sometimes don’t work. Reliable computers. A computer for each student or tablets for student use. All the teachers trained at the same level: dropbox, smartboard, etc. Powerpoint for worship & Chapel. We need a trained IT on staff or more readily available computer help. I would love a Smartboard in my classroom. 16 BCS Teacher Strategic Planning Questionnaire - February 2013 Have the technology integrated into the physical classroom and not just added to the room. A smartboard in 1st grade. Projector on the ceiling. A smartboard would be nice to have, but I would need more intense training with the whiteboard available. A projection system would be nice also. I don’t have computers for children, but a couple would be nice to have, if they work. I feel that I have all I need with the smartboard, tv, video & DVD player. Thank you A laptop that I could take with me to teach music. One that has my music files on it. A classroom! I need more training (experience) with technological devices in order to be able to employ them in my classroom. I’m sure that using Smartboards & Powerpoint would be of great value to my students but I do not have the training. Maybe I should take some classes this summer. I use my whiteboard for all of my lessons. My overhead projector is not clear and difficult for the students to see. A smartboard would benefit my students. 3 –If you had to explain why you teach at BCS to someone, what would you say? God totally opened the door for me to be a part of this great school. It is a privilege to teach here and be a part of the great things God is doing at BCS. I teach at BCS because I get the privilege of pointing young people to Christ daily. I get to speak of God’s grace & goodness & demonstrate His faithfulness moment by moment. Together we get to grow to be more & more like Christ. I am blessed and, I trust, a blessing. I love the freedom to pray and incorporate Christ/Bible into my teaching. The students are so enjoyable with which to work. I teach at BCS because I love the environment. I love openly sharing Jesus with the students and the staff support I receive. I am excited about the direction of the school. There are goals and efforts being made toward those goals. I do it for God’s glory. I want to use my gifts and talents to help further the next generation in education as well as with their walk with God. Opportunity to help provide a great education with a Biblical worldview. Family oriented - never had to miss a game or event for my kids. It is God’s calling for me. I have a passion to share the Gospel and train up the next generation to teach the world for Christ. I love being able to share my faith with the students daily. I love being able to pray with the students. I love being able to share Biblical pri8ncipals and morals with the students. Seek first the Kingdom of God. In my life I try to put God first. There are opportunities to better myself and family apart from ministry. But the eternal benefits are a priority. Teachers camaraderie Christian curriculum Christian environment - able to pray with students, read Bible, quote verses, mission projects, chapel, Bible classes. Families are supportive. BCS allows a Christian influence in the classroom. I can share God’s word & my testimony. I like the smaller student to teacher ratio. I would like to know if the foundation is at work or are we just treading water. The God centered atmosphere is very important for the students, as well as teachers. We can incorporate Him into any lesson we teach, and not just during “Bible time”. The administration & staff are great support, and like family. We have the same goals and always do the best we can for the students. I love that we have a Christian world view. We are separate from the world and all subjects come from what God’s word says. I love that I can share my faith and spend time in prayer with my students and with staff. I appreciate the strong bond/support that our teachers have from those in authority. I am here because I believe that God has called me here. I believe that the private Christian school is what school should be again in America. BCS gives us the freedom to share our love of Christ and to teach students the love & fear of the Lord and to become servants. I know (believe) that the education our students receive is high quality and God-centered. This school is dear to my heart, too, because I graduated from here (went here my last 2 years of high school). I teach here because I believe God has called me to teach here and to have my children attend here. I love teach students - not necessarily the material being presented (although our curriculum is great! - Saxon & ABeka). It is very rewarding to see a student learn but also to become more mature educationally and spiritually. Our curriculum is challenging and I like to know that we do not just wimping out on the students who attend here. I teach at BCS because I believe in a Christian Education. BCS is a school that strives to put God first while preparing the students academically. The students at BCS get an excellent education from a Christian world view. 17 BCS Strategic Planning Student Questionnaire - February 2013 BCS Strategic Planning Student Questionnaire - February 2013 1 – What one thing BCS does better than the last school you attended? Or if you have not attended another school, what one thing stands out about BCS? 7th grade The athletics is a lot better. I love the Christian environment. There are a lot of really nice caring kids & teachers. They really are challenging me and helping me get up my grades. Well there’s not any drugs or alcohol. But there is cussing sometimes. That you get to use your phones and ipods at lunch. That we don’t have a gym. BCS has really good people and friends. The curriculum also challenges me more. One thing better than my last school is the people. At BCS I feel safer because it’s more private than public schools. It has a great environment with great students. It also gives us a great education. My old school had me doing little kid stuff and calling me bad names or blaming. At BCS I am having more FUN. BCS stands out because of how different everyone is. I last attended a public school in 1 st grade and I didn’t like it, but I came to BCS and liked it because it is Christian. With bullying it is stopped and does not continue on. 8th grade Generally all the students are nicer. There is more group effort in the classes and team activities. At my last school we had to uniforms and I personally think that it is great to have us wear uniforms only on chapel days but no in weekends if students dress appropriately. The size of the classes. Better environment. Teachers actually care for their students. God fearing teachers, which makes me feel safe compared to other schools. They have better teachers at BCS and it’s very religious. 9th grade I think that the chapels are great and I especially like how much the teachers are willing to help out when I don’t understand something. This school has more help for students. BCS has more challenging curriculum. Also it has more sports opportunities & nicer genuine people. They provide a more friendly, and obviously, Christian environment than my previous public school. There is more one on one time then at public schools and over all it’s just a better learning experience. Everyone is close. I like the small feeling and we get out more than the public schools. We have hat days unlike public schools. We have Bible classes. We also have community service projects. BCS academic standards far exceed that of other schools. Their education is much better than any other school I’ve been to. Not as crowded as all the others. One more van. The teachers are nice. We have a good Christian atmosphere that is welcoming. We have a good staff. 10th grade The teachers take time to make sure you understand the material and sit down with you and teach you until you understand. BCS teachers put time in to make sure you understand something and that you aren’t falling behind. The teachers and students actually care about you. Everyone is really close to each other. Good one on one attention from teachers. More advanced classes. Christian setting. 18 BCS Strategic Planning Student Questionnaire - February 2013 Advanced scholastics, and Christian teachings. It is smaller and much tight knit like a family. The friendliness of the students. The teachers are amazing and help work with you. 11th grade It has Bible class. The size. We are small. There aren’t as many people. Teachers are nicer. Good friends. I like being able to have a Bible class. 12th grade Atmosphere I like that you can know everyone in the high school & mostly everyone is welcoming & friendly. Everyone is like a big family in BCS. We all know each other, help each other, and are about each other. Not only students, but also teachers too. I was homeschooled so the social aspect is great. I enjoy the small class sizes and that I can interact with teachers in a more personal level. I have been at this school my whole life. BCS has a better education. The education is better. When I came here from my old school I had trouble at first but now I have a better education. BCS is a friendlier and safer environment that is centered in learning. The one on one opportunity with the teachers and their helping you a lot more. I think BCS has better relationship between the teachers and students. 2 – If you could change one thing about BCS, what would that be? 7th grade I would change the money. I would not change anything. Bigger lockers! It would be nicer kids, sometimes, there’s really mean kids. But I really love this school! That there should be bigger lockers and we had recess. I would change the lockers because they are really small. I would change the music teacher. I wouldn’t change anything. I wouldn’t change anything. Bigger lockers. Nothing!! I would like some courses to be full year such as art and computer. Computer was 1 st semester and art this semester. I enjoy both. I would also like to take music through 12th grade and take Spanish 4 years of high school rather than 2. That we could get art and computers for all 4 quarters. 19 BCS Strategic Planning Student Questionnaire - February 2013 8th grade My test scores have gone down since I came here and at my old school we were allowed to listen to music during tests. I would like to change the extracurricular activities. I believe there should be more than just sports. I would change the 8th grade Bible and geography curriculum because my class and I would agree that it is very confusing and slightly boring. I would change the 8th grade Geography curriculum. I know the school has been working on it, but we need a gym! More ski days!! 9th grade I wouldn’t change anything. I would change the locker sizes & have more arts opportunities such as drama. That we would have a gym. If we could have more community service projects & reaching out to differentn placew could help our school at more in Christian perspective & socially. I would change the lunch room. Make it bigger and I would add a music/band program. Maybe a drama/debate class. Maybe after school activities like a book club or a board game day. I would like to see more professionalism from some teachers, and I would like to see a better music/drama class. More clubs (music, drama, etc.) New gym. Bigger lockers. Build a gym. I would like BCS to build a gym. A nice change would be a good way to get our lunches faster & not after the second lunch bell. I would like for more language classes to be open like: Greek, Latin & French. Maybe a drama, debate class. 10th grade Bigger classrooms and less homework. More electives. Longer lunches, maybe bigger lockers. More community service. Lockers Longer summer vacation. Longer lunches. Longer lunch. Expanded lunch time. Longer lunch. Cut PE down for a longer lunch. Have 3 tardies per class. Not every 3 tardies for any class. (That is how the public school system works). Probably the rumors that spread like way fast and they are never true. The Bible classes. We need an actual Bible teacher who has studied not just the Bible but that time period. Someone who has actually gone to school for more in that field. Longer lunches. Longer lunch. 11th grade More class options (maybe some AP classes), better teachers (Mr. Williams, Mrs. Garcia, and Mrs. Wylie are great teachers). More class options. Have more students. PE every day. Nothing. More elective class choices. 20 BCS Strategic Planning Student Questionnaire - February 2013 12th grade GYM!!! Not having our own gym hurts the school. The school has to spend money renting other facilities which takes money from other things. It also hampers the sports teams. GET A GYM!!! Finish the athletic field so there can be football & soccer games at the school. It would be having ore options for classes, so students can participate in classes they want to take. Getting a gym. I would want more variety of classes. That BCS has a gym. I would like to see more students attend this school. Being able to have a gym or getting the football team into class C division to qualify for state. Nothing. 3 –If you had to explain why you attend BCS to a friend, what would you say? 7th grade For athletics and education. I go to BCS because of the teachers, education & the environment. Because there are no bullies, gangs, or mean people. I like it because I get to learn all about God and his wonderful creation. I would say for better education & no bullies. I attend BCS because it’s a Christian school & I like all the friendly people. I can get a Christian education in school and not just on Sundays. Public schools had bad environments and too much bullying. BCS has NO bullying and good, Christian environment. EPICNESS I attend BCS to get a Christian education so I can be prepared to defend the gospel of Jesus Christ. Because I can learn about God and not be unprepared for the world. 8th grade The overall curriculum is better because we can learn the truth and the English and math is more difficult so you learn more. I would say the environment is friendlier and getting a Christian education is important to me. I want to be in a Christian environment so that I can become closer to God and act more Christian like! The teachers are awesome! I love the Christian views there. The classes aren’t that hard and we get time to do our work. The hot lunches are awesome. Other schools didn’t connect with me . . . plus, the school work is a little bit hard (which I like) so I can learn more. My parents made me. 9th grade I came here because I wanted a change in my education and I really like it here. I have made new friends and the teachers are good. I thought this school would be more help than any other school. It is a good Christian environment where teachers actually care about you and I get to play sports. The Christian aspect of it. I’d advise him/her to this school one, because it values Christian aspect, two, you don’t have to feel insecure, and 3, there is not near as many people here so it’s not as overwhelming. Because I wanted a Christian and better education. I like to spend time with Christian friends and hanging out with them. My parents require me to attend BCS, although I’ve begun to appreciate the academic excellence more and more. Good environment. It’s a Christian school. 21 BCS Strategic Planning Student Questionnaire - February 2013 It has a good Christian environment. It’s safe and it’s welcoming. I like the size of the school. Because it’s a Christian school and it’s small, so you know everybody. I also would say I go here because it has high academic standards. It was fun. 10th grade BCS is a smaller school, which means you can get to know your classmates better and smaller classes are much nicer. Both my parents and myself wanted me to attend school here. And since I’ve come I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s a good atmosphere and we get to talk about God. The Christian environment. The teachers. People are kind. You can get Christian education. I like it and it’s better for my spiritual growth than public school. It’s a better place to learn and grow. A lot of my friends go here. I intend to build on my faith and become stronger in God’s word. I also came because of the friendly environment. It was a choice that I made to help me do better and grow closer to God. Because they have a good education system and a good Bible course. This is a place where you can learn about God. 11th grade It has small classes where you get to know everyone on a person level. Everyone knows and talks to each other and for the most part is nice. I came here since I was 5 years old. So I don’t have to be around tons and tons of people at a public school. My parents made me. To get ready for college. Because of the positive environment. 12th grade Atmosphere is completely different. Don’t have all the same pressures as a public school would. Teachers and students are friendlier. The whole school is like a family. I have been attending BCS since Kindergarten and I enjoy how helpful, kind, & caring the teachers are. Because I was sick and tired of getting picked on in elementary school every day of the week. Because I am around really good environment and I love how we learn about God and His word. 22 BCS Board of Directors Strategic Planning Questionnaire - February 2013 BCS Board of Directors Strategic Planning Questionnaire - February 2013 Administration Results 1 – What changes do you see for BCS in the next five years? I think enrollment is going to go up because of the success of our pre-school program and the school’s accreditation. I think we’ll have a new building or will have started a new building. Increased recognition in the community because of our accreditation. Completion of gym and additional classrooms. 20% growth in enrollment in students Become more well known by the Billings community A before and afterschool program Sufficient cash reserve to operate at least ½ year Increased enrollment from preschool to 12th grade Increased tuition scholarship opportunities such as GPA based or full tuition for need based - 2 per year ?? Daycare for the area (definite need assessed already) - $$ the issue God will guide us through to completion of a fully-developed campus complex where students will continue to receive a Christ-centered education while having available the opportunities afforded public school students ,i.e.: additional classroom space with fully-equipped science lab, computer lab, music / fine arts room, industrial arts shop and gymnasium /locker rooms. I see our K-12 enrollment growing back to the 250 student level. Additional students-hopefully increase in pay for our teachers New Technology Updated school building Fund raising for school reserves Athletic fundraising Addition of 3-5 classrooms to expand science program, high school course offerings, added preschool classes, and maybe a need for more than one 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade classrooms. BCS will have a gym within the next 1-3 years. Added High School teachers (possibly part-time to start), added teacher aides, added resource teacher. Preschool program which has flexibility to meet the needs of families for part-time or full-day care. Teachers will become much more comfortable with new technology and will be given the training and equipment to meet this goal. BCS will be well known within the Billings Community as a Christian School who educates students well, loves the Lord and the students, and gives back to the community. Add teachers and staff who love the Lord and BCS students. A vibrant, mutually beneficial “partnership” with Cornerstone Community Church. 2 – What is unique about BCS? It is a tight community – it makes it easy for the kids to transition on to new classes. A very kind environment, with a Christian attitude. The teachers are very caring and devoted. The parents know each other well. The kids can get into sports at an earlier age than other schools. Flexible with family needs / schedules – kids aren’t punished for going on family vacations during a normal school week. The opportunity to have your child taught in a Godly environment. Classroom sizes that are conducive to individualized instruction. Bibical principles that back up character-based education. Parents have easy access to teachers and participation in school activities. It works well as a “whole” and treats everyone (staff&students/family) as they are individually important. Non-denominational Christian education with an excellent dedicated staff 23 BCS Board of Directors Strategic Planning Questionnaire - February 2013 The Christian environment The teachers/staff are like family to the students, they care beyond their teaching duties The principal and staff know all the children by name The students are included in everything from sports to yearbook The students really care about one another and the support is tremendous when they are in need The principal and teachers are not afraid to discipline when needed Great communication from the teachers about the students grades, attendance, attitude God is at our school every day: guiding, protecting, encouraging, providing. 3 –What challenges do you see for BCS in the next five years? Replacing text books Replacing the elementary building or coming up with another way to add more room Becoming more modern in terms of electronic tool Maintaining accreditation Effective marketing Competitive rival schools. Facility wear and tear and size. Government involvement in private schooling. Technology changes. The ability to reproduce existing leadership in all areas of the school as they retire. Rising cost of education. Meeting the needs of an expanding community, increased enrollment, building space, staff Student Busing Continuity of funding will remain an issue. Financial Competition from the larger catholic schools that are well funded, have great facilities, and athletic programs The public’s lack of knowledge about BCS Lack of extracurricular activities/sports Financial burden on families to send their children to BCS Student enrollment will increase and with it the range of student abilities will also increase causing a need for a resource teacher for student challenges and opportunities for excelling students Teachers who have any struggles teaching will be amplified as our student numbers increase. Teaching Aides may need to be made more available. Professional development will be critical. Stress on current facilities (doors, plumbing, playground, vans) as our student numbers increase. Increased community outreach. Challenging staff to grow as BCS grows. Fifteen years? New principal (change in leadership – unless Mr. Waggoner is up to it!) If we don’t address the 5-year challenges, we won’t be here 15 years from now not sure at this time As staff members retire, finding staff to take their places with the same competence and passion for Christian education. Need for experienced leadership as we move into the future. Replace elementary building 24
