9/2 – Welcome Letter – read and sign the welcome letter and survey. Bring it home and get it signed by a
parent/guardian and return it.
9/5 – Fear Questions – Read “Fear” by Gary Soto and answer the following questions using complete sentences.
1. How does Frankie bully Gary? How does he bully the other kids? (Use lines from the text!)
2. Frankie doesn't seem to know how to make friends. Perhaps this is why he bullies people. What evidence from the
text supports this?
3. Using evidence from the text, describe Frankie's home life.
4. Gary Soto calls his story “Fear.” Why do you think he chose that title?
5. How did his classmates see Frankie? How did their teacher see him?
9/5 Fear Paragraph – Choose EITHER Gary or Frankie:
1. According to our Code of Conduct, Character and Support, we need to intervene to help this student. Choose 3
things we could do (as students or teachers). In a well thought out paragraph of at least 7 sentences, explain each of
the three things in detail. What are they? Why are they important? How will they help this student?
9/9 – Speak Questions – Read the excerpt from Speak and answer the following questions using complete
sentences:
1. The narrator's name is Melinda. Where are some examples of her being bullied?
2. How does Melinda feel on the first day of school? How do we know this?
3. Who is Melinda's best friend? Use TBE to explain the closeness of their past relationship.
4. Why would Melinda's best friend mouth the words "I hate you?" Use TBE!
5. Why does Melinda describe the clans in the auditorium? What effect does this have on the story?
9/15 Character Web – (See p.87 in text) Create your own fictional character using a graphic organizer like the one
on p.87. In each of the 8 circles, write an adjective that describes your character. Then use each adjective in a
sentence that could appear in your story, but DO NOT use that adjective. Your sentences should suggest whether
your character is round, flat, static or dynamic. Finally, write a theme that a story about your character may convey.
9/19 “Two Kinds” Questions – On loose leaf, in complete sentences with TBE!
1. What was your reaction to the conflict between Jing-mei and her mother? Was one person more at fault than the
other? Explain.
2. What two faces does Jing-Mei see in the mirror after another failed training session? Why does she decide to stop
becoming a prodigy?
3. What hurtful comment does Jing-mei say to her mother after their big argument? What makes this comment so
hurtful?
4. Why do you think Jing-mei's mother set unrealistic goals for her daughter? What do Jing-mei's responses reveal
about her?
5. How has Jing-mei changed by the end of the story? How has her mother changed?
9/22 Jing-mei Characterization - Write 8 adjectives that describe Jing-mei. Then use each adjective in a sentence,
but DO NOT use that adjective. Your sentences should reveal events from the text. Finally, write a sentence stating
the theme of “Two Kinds.”

9/26 Dream Boogie Questions – Read “Dream Boogie” by Langston Hughes on p.620 in the text. Answer using
complete sentences and plenty of TBE!
1. What is the theme of this poem?
2. What does the poet mean when he refers to a deferred dream?
3. What is the purpose of the italicized words?
4. What is the "something underneath" Hughes suggests in line 12?
5. Hughes wrote during the 1920s to 1960s. Why might he write about this particular theme?
