Romeo and Juliet Act Summary/Review
Act 1: Comic Strip
In 15 slides (no more, no less), make a comic strip summarizing Act 1. Use your notes to help. Focus on
the most important information relevant to the plot and character development. Use text and dialogue
bubbles sparingly, but when you use them, make them count. I am grading your summarizing skills, text
comprehension, and ability to think critically and creatively. I am not grading your skills as a graphic
artist.
In your opinion, are Romeo and Juliet in love at this point? Is it possible that one is in love and one is
not; if so, which character is which? Explain why you have the opinion you have on this issue in a well
developed paragraph with a clear topic sentence. Use specific examples from the text and specific
inferences about each character’s personality to support your answer. Aim for at least 8-10 sentences.
The prologue already told us that Romeo and Juliet would kill themselves before the end of the play and
that this would end the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. Since we already know those
things, predict how this will happen. We cannot know you will be right for sure, but we can develop a
prediction and see how close our prediction is. The important part is that we are predicting and
inferring.
We will be doing a critical review of the play after we finish Act 5. At this point, do you like the play?
Describe why or why not and be specific. It is fine if you like some things and dislike others, but you
must describe why.
Act 2: Mock Diary Entry
Boys, pretend you are Romeo. Girls, pretend you are Juliet. Write a diary entry of 2-3 paragraphs
summarizing your feelings at the end of Act 2. Work hard to display the perspective of your character.
Your writing style should be stream of consciousness and informal, just like a real diary entry.
Talk about how you feel about your new spouse, your plans together in the near future, how you will
break the news to your family, and how you think your family will take the news. You are demonstrating
your understanding of the characters’ mindsets and understanding of how these characters fit into the
play. You are also making further predictions about how you think the plot will develop.
Answer the following in 3-5 Sentences.
1. What age is too young to start dating? Describe why.
2. What age is too young to marry? Describe why.
3. Is either Romeo or Juliet making a good decision? Describe why.
Act 3: Mock Diary Entry.
Boys, pretend you are Juliet. Girls, pretend you are Romeo. Write a diary entry of 2-3 paragraphs
summarizing your feelings at the end of Act 3. Work hard to display the perspective of your character.
Your writing style should be stream of consciousness and informal, just like a real diary entry.
Talk about how you feel about your new spouse now that things are significantly more complicated.
Talk about how you feel about their actions and how they affect your relationship. Talk about how you
feel about your family as well. Additionally, talk about how you feel about your future plans based upon
the book. You are demonstrating your understanding of the characters’ mindsets and understanding of
how these characters fit into the play. You are also making further predictions about how you think the
plot will develop.
Answer the following in 3-5 Sentences.
1. Do parents know what is best for their kids?
2. Do you think Romeo would be a good husband? Describe why or why not.
3. Would Juliet be better off with Paris? Describe why or why not.
We will be doing a critical review of the play after we finish Act 5. At this point, do you like the play?
Describe why or why not and be specific. It is fine if you like some things and dislike others, but you
must describe why.
Act 4: Death Announcement
Write a short 2-3 paragraph newspaper death announcement for Juliet. Write it from the perspective of
Lord and Lady Capulet. Remember they do not know about Friar Laurence’s plan or the marriage to
Romeo.
Make sure to include a bold, catchy title and a picture with a caption that you deem appropriate.
Include time of death, supposed cause of death, and describe the family situation around Juliet’s death.
Be sure to mention Tybalt, Romeo’s hand in Tybalt’s death, and the planned marriage to Paris.
Answer the following in 3-5 Sentences.
1. How important is it for parents and kids to openly discuss dating? After all, if Romeo and
Juliet could openly discuss their situation with their families, there would be many fewer
problems right now, and if their parents truly respected Romeo and Juliet’s choices, there
would be no problems at all.
2. At this point, what ways are there, if any, in addition to the slightly hair-brained plan of Friar
Laurence, for Romeo and Juliet to be happy together?
