Help Sheet for Mr. Schmidt’s Novel Research Project,
Lord of the Flies
Step #1
Use the following databases to find information. Suggestions and
tips for using them are listed below. Also, if you access the
databases outside of school, you will need to use the usernames
and passwords to log-on.

Click on “Literary Reference Center.” Select the
Advanced Search option in order to check the
“full text” box. Use the “Literary Criticism” tab to
avoid reading through all selections.
Click on the citation icon and select MLA to
copy—be sure to reverse indent.
Ignore the labeled citation icon which is on the
left.

Click on “Articlesfirst” in the upper, left-hand
corner—always check the “full text” box.
The citation information is done and found under
the tab “External Resources: Cite This Item.”
Select the proper form.

Select the “Literature Resource Center”. Enter
the author’s last name or the title of the work.
Once the selections come up, click on the
“Literature Criticism” or other tabs to narrow your
choices.
Also, click on the “Gale Literary Index” tab and
search by author or title.
The citation is at the end of the article.

Use the three Help Sheets (for the databases ) which are shown
below.

Areas to Use: Simply conduct a “basic search” or use “advanced
search” if you want to restrict your search.
Citation:
Citation is at the end of the article in MLA format.

Google
Use the Internet wisely. Set up a good internet search when you use
Google. Remember to use the “+” and “-“ symbols to narrow down the
search.
For example: William Golding Lord of the Flies
"William Golding" +"Lord of the Flies" +symbolism +edu
Cuil
Another search engine option is Cuil at www.cuil.com. This engine
searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance.
Other choices and suggestions are offered as well on the right-hand
side.

Click on the Ebsco on LHS library webpage
Once the EbscoHost selection comes up, click on the Literary Research Center
Use the Advanced Search option so that you can click on the “full text” box.
Enter your search: use the author’s last name and/or part or all of the title of the
novel. See the next two illustrations for examples.
For easier viewing you could click on the “Literary Criticism” tab which will pull up
only the articles dealing with criticism rather than all results -- as seen below.
Citation Information: Click on the HTML or PDF Full Text next to the Citation Icon.
Information for the citation will then be displayed at the beginning of the article ready to be
placed in correct form.

Click on “FirstSearch” on the library web-page, then click on “ArticleFirst” tab.
Enter your search: use the author’s last name and/or part or all of the title of the
novel. Be sure to click on the box, Full Text.
Citation Information: Citation is provided once the “External Resources:
Cite This Item” is clicked. Be sure to use the correct style.

Login to the School’s Library Webpage
Click on Gale Resource Center
Click on the Literature Resource Center
Enter your author’s name or the title of the work in the
“Basic Search” box.
Select on “Literature Criticism” tab
Citation information: Citation is at the end of the article.
You might also want to try the “Gale Literary Index” tab to find print
sources in our library.
This is a sample page of Hemingway after searching for the Title. If the
search is done by author his/her separate works are listed below with the
resource volume listed.
Example of how the page looks if searched for the Author. The works
are listed along with the sources.
For Lord of the Flies, LHS library does not have all of the books listed in the Gale
Literary Index but we do have: Contemporary Literary Criticisms; World Literature
Criticism; Literature and Its Times; World Literature and Its Times and Novels for
Students available.
