GENE EXPRESSION
Target: I will be able to explain how DNA and genes result
in the expression of traits and how genes turn on/off.
Gene Expression: Process by which information from a
gene is used to make a functional gene product
(Proteins, tRNA, and rRNA).
The type of cell that is made is determined by the
genes that are expressed.
Pg. 95
Regulatory Proteins: Proteins that bind to the DNA to
control transcription.
They act as gene switches to turn on or off the genes.
Negative Control: Transcription is controlled because
the protein interferes with (stops) transcription
Positive Control: Transcription is controlled because the protein
enhances (helps) transcription
All cells contain the same DNA and Genes
•Depending on what genes are turned on or off, will
determine what cell it is and how it functions.
Cell Differentiation: the genes that are turned on (or
transcribed), results in different proteins being made (or
translated), which makes the cell what it is.
Hox Genes: Master control genes.
They control the order and location where cells,
tissues and organs develop in an organism
If Hox Genes do not turn on in the right order, then
body parts may develop in the wrong place.

Summary
TURNING GENES ON AND OFF
Draw a picture to
represent positive control
of gene expression.
• Write a sentence explaining
how the picture relates to
positive control.
Draw a picture to represent
negative control of gene
expression.
•
Write a sentence explaining
how the picture relates to
negative control.
Draw what a Hox Gene does,
or what happens when it
doesn’t work correctly.
