President’s Message
This time of year is a busy time for your Board and our Staff as we review our finances for 2014 and prepare the
budget for the next year. Budgeting can be described as preparing a plan to spend your money but as most of us
know it is often a case of finding the money to execute your plan.
Budgeting for us at the Centre has always been a case of the latter, especially in the last few years. Funding from
our major funder has been frozen for a number of years and the money we get from working casinos has also been
reduced. As you also know, just about everything we buy or use has gone up in price, from groceries to utilities
and even insurance.
We continue to pursue every grant program available and that helps but it looks like we will still need to do some
things to ensure we have the money to execute those plans.
It is with some regret, therefore, that I have to tell you that there will be some increases in the fees charged for
our programs and other activities at the Centre. This will not be done haphazardly but with careful consideration
of costs and the needs of the users. Some of the increases will be an attempt to bring us in line with fees charged
at other Centres. Not good news, I know, but doing this will ensure a sound future for our Centre and for all the
good things that happen here.
I’d like to hear your thoughts on this and on any of the other things we do. Feel free to contact me or any other
member of the board.
Jim

From the Executive Director
“Let Us Not Forget”
This is the month to honour those who fought for our country. November 11th is the day we honour the men and
women who represented our country during war time. Please take the time on this day to remember and honour
these people.
Fall is such a busy time around here and the staff seem to be in run mode most of the time to keep up with all of
the events and activities. As always I thank all of you who help us out each and every day with some aspect of
the centre!! We simply could not manage without all of you.
Our dinner show and silent auction was a great success. At least all comments that I have received to date indicate
the food was great, the entertainment was excellent and silent auction well received by all. We made
approximately $1750.00 on the silent auction. Many thanks to Allison Crowder who worked so hard in bringing
in all the product for our silent auction!!
With that said, would you like to see the Popovichs’ come back again next year?? Please let us know so we can
book them as soon as possible. We do have “Louisiana Hayride” booked to entertain next October 9th and 10th,
2015. It has not yet been decided whether this event will have a meal served due to the high costs of the
entertainment. We will have more information closer to the event.
On February 12, 2015, we will be having another dinner show. The entertainment for this event will be the Calgary
Fiddlers, so it should also be an amazing event. Look for it in your next newsletter.
October is the month that we prepare our yearly budget for the next year. As many of you know expenses continue
to climb, however our revenues have remained stagnant for some time now. While we do our very best to keep
our prices as low as possible for your benefit, at the end of the day we have to raise fees to cover our costs. The
board met in October and approved that the following items will increase.
Birthday Supper Tickets will be $12.00 member and $13.00 for non-members effective January 2015.
Housekeeping rate will go from $20.00/hr. to $22.00/hr. as of January 2015.
Coffee has been already been raised from .25 a cup to .50 a cup.
Bar drinks will increase to $3.50 from $3.00 effective immediately.
Concession rates will change as posted on the board effective immediately.
2015 Memberships will increase from $20.00 to $25.00 and this will come into play during our membership blitz
on November 24th and 25th next month.
5
Our Snow and Mow Open House was also a great success this year. Many thanks to Mandy for the presentation
and Marilyn for holding down the fort, while Mandy and I did the signup!! We had a really good turnout and I
think we gained a few new members to the centre, as well as some people signed up for our housekeeping
program. Thanks so all who came out for this event. Your support to our centre is very important. We want to
keep our Snow and Mow and Housekeeping Programs going, as we believe it is important to those of you who
wish to remain in your homes longer.

In November, Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day) is a memorial day observed
in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their Armed Forces who
have died in the line of duty. Remembrance Day is observed on November 11 to recall the end of hostilities "at
the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Lest we forget.
I’m excited to report that our Snow Open House and registration ran successfully with 47 clients signed up for
the winter season to come. If you missed the open house and would like to register please book an appointment
today as there are only 80 spots and they are filling up quickly.
Our trip this month is to the Jubilee Auditorium where we will see the students of the Calgary Arts Academy
perform in their annual winter celebration. The cost for this trip is free but to keep costs down all participants
must find their own transportation to the event.
Sign-up sheets have also been posted for our trips in December. The Rotary Club of Calgary has invited us to join
them for their Christmas Concert Kickoff starring, The Young Canadians at the Jack Singer Concert hall. Deadline
to sign-up for this trip is Monday, November 18, 2014. Back by popular demand is the Christmas Light Tour.
There are three stops in our tour; Spruce Meadows, Airdrie Festival of Lights and Confederation Park. I look
forward to spending an evening with you all, adventuring around seeing all the beautiful light displays and getting
into the festive spirit.
For further details on any programs, trips or events, please take a look at the rest of the newsletter or check out
the sign-up boards for posters.

Bad Parrot
A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse
vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and
tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else
he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary.
Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot
got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the
freezer.
For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a
peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer.
The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with
my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to
do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behaviour."
John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a
dramatic change in his behaviour, the bird spoke-up, very softly,
"May I ask what the turkey did?"
And you thought there were no clean jokes left!

Parents forgot it,
Teenagers don’t get it.

The Italian Mother
Giuseppe excitedly tells his mother he's
fallen in love and that he is going to get
married.
He says, 'Just for fun, Mama, I’m going
to bring over three women and you try
and guess which one I'm going to marry.'
The mother agrees.
The next day, he brings three beautiful
women into the house, sits them down on
the couch and they chat for a while. He
then says, 'Okay, Mama, guess which one
I'm going to marry?'Mama says
immediately, 'The one on the right.’
'That's amazing, Mama. You're right.
How did you know?’
Mama replies: 'I don't like her.'
