Prevention is the best approach. We request your
co-operation in not sending any snacks or lunches
containing peanuts or nut products and to refrain
from bringing aerosol products to Joseph Howe.
Our school’s policy relating to snow is the snow stays on
the ground. We feel that throwing snow or kicking snow
could result in a student being seriously injured. I don’t
believe that one of our students would intentionally hurt
another student. However, I’ve been at schools where
glasses have been broken, a retina has been scratched,
swelling has occurred to the head, and a tooth was chipped,
all as a result of snowballs. SNOW STAYS ON THE
GROUND!
We have made numerous announcements to the students
about this policy. Students who are caught throwing or
kicking snow will receive a letter home, which is to be
returned to the office signed and if caught again, could be
suspended from school.
Please reinforce this with your son/daughter so we can
remain accident free at Joseph Howe.
Thank you for your support in helping to enforce this
policy.
PROVINCE-WIDE STATUTORY HOLIDAY

celebrating the importance of families taking time to be
together. Enjoy your day together!

W. A. P. E.
The Winter Alternative Program in Education (W.A.P.E.)
is a one-day program that is part of the curriculum at
Joseph Howe. We expect that every student will be
involved and will actively participate in an activity on
Friday, February 28. One of the strands in the Health and
3
Physical Education curriculum is active participation. This
includes living skills as well as physical activity and fitness.
With the large variety of activities available, such as
Second City, skiing, cooking, Art Gallery of Ontario,
Science Centre and E-zone, we know that each and every
student will find something that will appeal to them.
Ms. Sherri Boland, Principal
TORONTO PUBLIC HEALTH CLINIC

JOSEPH HOWE SKI CLUB NEWS
Ski Club will take place after school on the
following Thursdays:
Jan. 16, Jan. 23, and Jan. 30.
(Make-up date in case Skyloft cancels will be Feb. 6). Note
to participants: If we cancel a ski date for any reason
Skyloft does not give us a refund.
We would like to commend the parents and guardians of
Joseph Howe on their prompt notification to the office
regarding the absence or delayed arrival of their child.
We request that parents and guardians keep children who
are ill home from school if they have a sore throat, fever,
cough, or other symptoms indicating illness. This year’s
flu symptoms seem to be fever, sore throat, and cough. We
appreciate your co-operation in this matter. We continue
to announce over the P.A. for children to wash their hands
with soap and water, especially before lunch.
Please think of others when you contemplate sending your
sick child to school to just do one presentation or test or to
participate in that one sporting event, and then return
home. Your child is going to come in contact with many
people in that short amount of time in class or at that
sporting event.
Communicate with your child’s teacher/coach to find out
about tests or homework while they are absent.
http://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/josephhowe
Alternative arrangements will be made for your child’s
presentation, or scheduled testing. The team will just have
to play on without your child, but the spread of illness will
be prevented.
ME TO WE
ONE BRICK AT A TIME

drop them off at your RBC branch or send them in with
your student. Every $20 raised provides a brick for a
school and access to education. Thank you for your
support.

THE BULLY, THE BULLIED
AND THE BYSTANDER
This is the third part of a series on The Bully,
the Bullied and the Bystander. This month we
will look at the “Bystander”.
THE BYSTANDER
Someone who sees a person bully another is called a
“Bystander”. Bystanders may not be directly involved with
bullying behaviour, however, they may encourage the bully
by laughing or by not taking responsibility for helping the
victim.
Parents and the school community must help children to
understand the problems associated with bullying
(emotional & physical) and the personal contributions they
can make to help reduce it. With adult support, children
can develop strategies to intervene themselves, or seek
adult assistance. For example, bystanders can:





remove themselves from the situation and report to a
trusted adult
reach out to victims; find allies and stand up to the
bully as a group
send the message with words and actions that bullying
is NOT okay and NOT funny
encourage the victim to report or self-report to a
trusted adult
finally, with adult support, bystanders can become
active witnesses, promoting attitudes in their peer
group, which promote social responsibility and
encourage respect and compassion for others.

School Services
