any taxes.

King Louis XVI was
one of the richest kings
in the history of the
world, while many of
his subjects were
starving to death.
• Why do you think
this angered the

• B. The Revolution Begins
• 1. Because of the economic problems, Louis
XVI called a meeting of representatives
from each of the estates to discuss the
raising of taxes
• 2. Representatives from the working class
(3rd estate) thought that all estates should
have to pay taxes.

• 3. Louis XVI would not allow the clergy
and nobles to pay taxes, so the 3rd estate
vowed to create a constitution and a new
government.
• 4. When representatives for the 3rd estate
met to discuss the constitution, the doors to
their meeting place were locked. So , they
met at a nearby tennis court
