Last Tryout
That day was the final tryout for the Grimsby Grizzlies. When all the girls who were trying out
got to the gym at Nelles Public School, we started the first drill, running 6 laps with basketballs;
Backwards, sideways and even in karaoke. After all of our small drills, Coach Chuck split us into
two teams. He pulled out two benches and told us to be prepared for a scrimmage. Half way
into the game my team was losing 3-0. Stephanie sunk two baskets, the first one and the one
after Lauren`s. Now we were tied. Angrily, Reagan bolted up the court and scored for the other
team. The score changes once again to 4-3, them. After Reagan scored, Brittany stole a breakaway and ended it with a perfect lay-up. Yet again the score changes to 4-4, next basket wins.
This time the other team`s point guard dribbled right into Chiomama. So Chioma slowly brought
up the ball so we could get set up. I stood at the left side of the three-point line and called for the
ball. Chioma noticed that I was open so she chest-passed it to me. I dribble up twice and shoot,
crossing my toes, hoping that it will go in. The ball stops and drops into net, hitting no backboard
or rim. It was all net. My coach cheers in excitement. After winning our small scrimmage coach
decides to tell us who made the team. Conveniently everyone he chose to be on the team was
there. He announced that everyone made the team and everyone jumped and screamed in joy.
Next time we won`t play against each other, but with each other.
Persuasive Paragraph
Starting Off
The last thing you want your child to be doing is sitting on the couch playing video games. If you
want your child to stay out of trouble then convince him or her to join a basketball league.
Basketball is a great sport for a kid to play, if you would like your child to stay active and be
athletic, then basketball is the right choice. Basketball has simple, easy rules to learn. In little
league, your child earns these simple rules and will meet new friends, and will grow to love
basketball. From there they can move on to playing on a house league or rep team. Possibly
even their school. Where your child can learn more complex drills such as zone defense or a
lay-up. Basketball is a great, fun, learning tool that you can experience and share with your child.
Descriptive Paragraph
Game Winning
I jog back to half-court after watching my signature shot glide through the orange hoop. I see the
opposing team hang their heads low in defeat, as the ball slowly bounces under the net. I smell
the horrible odour of sweat and fear of the other team, there`s absolutely no way that they`re
catching up. Hearing the crowd cheer your name over and over again is a glorious feeling. I
taste the metal of my braces as my lips pull back to form a smile. My teammates come running
at me as they high-five me for my awesome 3-pointer. My coach calls me off, to congratulate
me on my game winning shot.
Expository Paragraph
Shooting
Are you wondering why your foul shots are not making it in? It is probably because you do not
know the proper method. Line up your feet. If you`re right handed then your right foot will be
slightly ahead of your left, but if you happen to be left handed then your left foot will be slightly
ahead of your right foot. Next, use the `` 5 procedure ``. First, cup the ball in your dominate
hand and make sure your fingertips are lined up with one of the horizontal black lines. Secondly,
swing the ball up to your chin and high-five it with your other hand. The third step is very
important. Always keep your eyes on the net. Then, shoot the ball at the net with a back spin on
the ball and watch it soar through the air. As soon as the ball hits the rim, charge at the net and
wait for the basketball to go in the net, or go get the rebound. If you follow these steps your
shooting will be successful.
