2014-2015
Class Orientation
As the 2014-2015 school year begins, we welcome you and your family! The construction of the Life
Skills Lab began in July. We are anticipating the opening by the Spring 2015 semester. Students will
finally be able to do laundry, practice office skills and cook using the stove, oven and microwaves.
Our curriculum guides students to utilize functional/practical skills towards adulthood by living life
independently. The curriculum aligns functional skills, goals and objectives with California State
Framework, standards-based core curriculum, and common core. The functional academic domains
students will be working on are Communication, Independent Living Skills, Transitional Skills,
Occupational Skills, Community Based Instruction (CBI) and Social Skills. These domains offer direct
instruction for students to learn the skills needed to participate in the natural environment. It enhances
the student’s general functioning in non-school environments such as the home, the community and the
workplace. The activities are an extension of the class to reinforce goals and objectives on the student’s
IEP. Instruction may be presented to the entire class, small groups, or individually based on the type of
lesson and the needs of the students. Below are samples of the SEACO goals that to be covered this
school year.
Language Arts: FPI-20.5 Student will share descriptive information about locations and actions.
Math: FPI 7.5 Student will use “dollar over” method to pay for a purchase.
Science: FPI-18.5/19.5 Student will categorize various weather conditions to specific seasons.
Depending on the student’s grade level and class schedule, additional courses being offered at Golden
Valley are electives which may be taught by a General Education Teacher or Special Education Teacher.
In order to meet the need of every student, the Special Education Department may offer Art, Dance,
Foods, and Keyboarding classes for our regionalized programs. Students in this program will receive a
Certificate of Completion upon graduation instead of a High School Diploma. Furthermore, the annual
California Alternative Program Assessment instead of STAR testing will assess students.
Expectations:
1. Students are to be prompt to class and ready to work before the bell rings.
2. Students are to follow all class, school and district rules.
3. Students are to respect others keep their hands and feet to themselves.
***Students are required to carry their Student ID Cards daily***
Grades:
This year staff will utilize a Pass/Fail Grading System. If your student is in a general education class they
will received a letter grade that may be modified. If you have a question for the elective teacher, please
feel free to call or email them (check your student’s class orientation for that particular teacher).

Brunch/Lunch Money:
Please provide a lunch or send money or a check to apply to their cafeteria account, if your student does
not receive Free/Reduced Lunch. A cafeteria account enables us to keep track of your student’s money,
especially as it runs low. The cafeteria account can be accessed through the Golden Valley website.
Please provide a snack for brunch because of the various lunch times.
Transportation:
Over the years, several students have taken Dial-A-Ride/ Access to and from school. The bus picks the
students up at their home and drops them off at school. After school, it picks them up and drops them
off at home. This may be a solution for transporting your student to and from school. Call Ms.
Anderson or Mr. Coskran if you want more information. Students may be dropped off and pick up in
the bus area (1st Parking Lot). You can request a pass to allow you access to this area. If you have a
student who has difficulty walking, please drop them off in the designated location in the staff parking
lot. There will be morning and afternoon supervision. Morning supervision begins at 7:30 am and
Afternoon pick begins at 2:50 pm.
Note: Please pick up students by 3:15. Otherwise, they will be sitting in the office until it closes.
Personal information:
If you move or change your phone number, or email address, please update your Emergency Card. Last
year we had several changes and we were unable to contact parents.
Late Fridays:
Please check the Academic Calendar Bell Schedule for the Late Friday start times. The schedule will list
the first Friday dates when school begins at 10:41. On other late Friday’s school will begin at 9:40.
Donations:
We are asking for donations of $5 - $20 to help purchase materials, snacks, and food. Grocery Store and
Wal-Mart gift cards are acceptable. We are grateful of any donation.
