Bubble Gum Lab Question- Which brand of gum will blow the bigger bubble? Hypothesis- I hypothesis if I chew Hubba Bubba then I will be able to blow a bigger bubble. Materials: This is a list of materials need to complete the lab. 4 pieces of gum- Trident, Hubba Bubba or Bazooka, Extra & Dubble Bubble 1 piece of 1 meter long string 1 meter stick/ruler Procedure1. Read all directions pertaining to the lab. 2. Collect materials for lab 3. Ask a question. 4. Form a hypothesis 5. Test the Hypothesis by conducting the following experiment. The person with brand A will chew their piece of gum for 3 minutes. Blow a bubble. Using a string, your partner will measure the diameter (distance across) the bubble. Put the string on the meter stick to measure the distance in centimeters (cm). Record the measurement in a data table. Repeat the process for trials 2 and 3. Find the average bubble size for brand A (add all the distances up and divide by 3) and put in the data chart. Repeat steps 1-5 with brand B gum. . Repeat steps 1-5 with brand C gum. . Repeat steps 1-5 with brand D gum. 6. Complete part 2 of lab by asking a question. 7. Form a hypothesis for part 2 8. Test the hypothesis by completing the following- The person with brand A will roll their gum into a ball. Hold the gum (brand A) by using the piece of wax paper. Another person in the group would hold the same piece of gum with another piece of wax paper. Hold the gum near your chest, begin to walk slowly backwards. The third person in the group should hold the meter stick and measure the distance in centimeters the gum stretched before breaking. Record the measurement in the data chart. ONLY DO ONE TRIAL. Repeat #1-4 for brand B gum. 9. Clean up all lab material when the lab is complete. Collect Data: Gum A Trident 1. 2 cm X 1 cm X 1.5 cm 2. bubble gum flavor 3. pink Gum B- Hubba Bubba 1. 1.5 X 2.5 X 1 2. bubble gum flavor 3. pink B1 (cm) B2 (cm) B3 (cm) Average (cm) Bubble Stretch (cm) Gum A Trident Gum B Hubba Bubba Analyze DataIn the bubble gum we used Trident and Hubba Bubba gum to see which would blow the bigger bubble. We blew 3 bubbles with each type of gum and measured each bubble. For Trident our bubbles measured 1 cm, 1.5 cm, 1 cm in diameter. The average bubble size for Trident was 1.16 cm in diameter. For Hubba Bubba our bubbles measured 9 cm, 6 cm & 5 cm in diameter. The average bubble size for Hubba Bubba was 6.67 cm in diameter. For Trident gum, the largest bubble was 1.5 cm and the smallest bubble was 1 cm. For Hubba Bubba’s largest bubble was 9 cm and the smallest was 5 cm. When comparing the two gums and bubble size, Hubba Bubba produced larger bubbles. There were many other factors in the experiment that may have affected the outcome of the data collected. I am going to address 3 factors. Some students in the lab were unable to blow a bubble. This affected the data collected because those students could not measure a bubble if they were unable to blow one. It also would affect data if we took a class average. Another factor that would affect the outcome of our data was the fact that we did not measure the bubbles as accurately as possible. Some students measured the bubble while it was full and others measured bubbles that had already popped. This would leave some inconsistencies in our data. We also eyeballed the measuring of the bubble while it was still in their mouth and then we put the string up against a ruler. Use our eyeball to measure did not give up the most accurate measurement. The gum sizes were also not the same. This could have affected the outcome of our data. The Trident gum measured 2 cm X 1 cm X 1.5 cm and the Hubba Bubba measured. 1.5 cm X 2.5 cm X 1 cm. The larger amount of Hubba Bubba could have been a contributing factor in why I go larger bubbles. ConclusionOur question was which bubble gum would blow the bigger bubble? I hypothesized that if I chewed Hubba Bubba that I would be able to blow the bigger bubble. Hubba Bubba’s bubble sized averaged 6.67 cm in diameter while Trident’s bubble size averaged 1.16 cm. My data supported my hypothesis because in all trials using the Hubba Bubba gum, the bubbles turned out larger then all of the trials using Trident gum. If I were to do this same experiment again, I would find a more accurate method to measure bubbles and make sure that I only measured bubbles that were not popped. I would also try to find gum that was a similar size to test. This would ensure that I was just testing for the brand of gum and not just the size of the gum. In this experiment I not only learned that Hubba Bubba was better at blowing larger bubbles, but I also learned how to use the scientific method while conducting an experiment.
