Three English credits (reading, writing, and communications) that at minimum align
with grade level expectations for 9th and 10th grade (WAC 180-51-061) are awarded as
such:
○ Testing Measures:
■ CASAS Reading scores of 246 or higher.
■ ACCUPLACER Writing and Reading scores of 80 or higher.
■ Compass scores:
■ 450 or above on both GED tests in Writing and Reading
■ Partial credit will be given:
○ HSPE: Pass both Reading and Writing with a minimum of 400
○ SAT: Both Reading (score 350 or above) and Writing (380 or
above)
○ ACT: Both Reading (score 13 or above) and Writing (score 15 or
above)
○ Other Possibilities programs can review:
■ LOEP
■ ASVAB
■ Military credit for rank advancement
○ In addition to Testing Measures, additional credit will be given upon review of
work samples scored through Portfolio Based Competency Assessment. Please
see AHS21_English_PriorLearningRubric in which WA ABE Level Standards
and Common Core Standards are compared to reveal an alignment and
achievement of competencies. Samples of GED Writing and Rubrics and
Collection of Evidence and Rubrics are used to score Portfolios.
Two mathematics credits that at minimum align with mathematics grade level
expectations for 9th and 10th grade.
○ Testing Measures:
■ CASAS Math scores of 246 or higher.
■ ACCUPLACER Math Placement in Math 90.
■ 450 or above in GED Math test.
○ Options for earning credit, both based on the demonstration of mastery in a
portfolio:
■ Algebra credits aligned with 9th Grade Standards with mastery
demonstrated on:
1 The Khan Academy in at least 30 modules for Pre-Algebra, Basic
Equations, Linear Equations, Linear Functions, Inequalities and
Polynomials.
2 Or, in the demonstration of the above skills modeled after the
Statewide Collection of Evidence graduation option with

■ Prior Work Experience Evaluation:
405 hours= 1 credit through Portfolio Assessment upon ability to
demonstrate knowledge, provide a collection of evidence, and
competencies in at least 6 Common Core Standard Domains the field of
Mathematics align with Collection of Evidence. Demonstrations will reveal
knowledge of mathematical inquiry in real and complex equations, linear
and/or quadratic models, geometric shapes and measurements, and
probability and statistics as outlined by Common Core Standards and
Adult Basic Education Standards as shown below. Examples of
Competencies may be demonstrated as modeled by the WA Statewide
Collection of Evidence Math Option.
Two science credits (physical, life, and earth) that at minimum align with grade level
expectations for 9th and 10th grade. At least one credit in laboratory science is required.
○ Credit may be earned in:
■ 450 or above in GED Science test for non-lab credit.
■ 400 or above in OSPI EOC Biology test for lab credit.
■ Prior Work Experience Evaluation: 405 hours= 1 credit through Portfolio
Assessment upon ability to demonstrate knowledge, provide a collection
of evidence, and competencies in the field of Science and Science Lab.
Demonstrations will reveal knowledge of scientific inquiry, predictability,
and feedback to formulate and investigate multiple solutions as outlined
by Science EALRs.
■ Certificate/License Evaluation without Transcript:
Ability to communicate or demonstrate gained knowledge competencies
in the field of Science and Science Lab. Demonstrations will reveal
knowledge of scientific inquiry, predictability, and feedback to formulate
and investigate multiple solutions through the specific certificate/license
as outlined by Science EALRs.

Two and one-half social studies credits that at minimum align with the state’s
essential academic learning requirements in civics, economics, geography, history, and
social studies skills at 10th grade and/or above.
● One credit shall be required in United States history and government which shall
include study of the Constitution of the United States. No other course content
may be substituted as an equivalency for this requirement.
● One half credit shall be required in state history and government which shall
include study of state constitutions. One half credit may be waived or fulfilled
through an alternative learning experience see WAC 180-51-075 or WAC 18051-053.
● One credit shall be required in contemporary world history, geography, and
problems. Courses in economics, sociology, civics, political science, international
relations, or related courses with emphasis on current problems may be
accepted as equivalencies.
○ Credit may be earned in:
■ 450 or above in GED Social Studies test.
■ Competencies required for State History may be achieved through
specific State Certifications/License as distributed by the Department of
Licensing which requires knowledge of State Laws and Constitution. (EX/
Real Estate).
■ Prior Work Experience Evaluation: 405 hours= 1 credit through Portfolio
Assessment upon ability to demonstrate knowledge, provide a collection
of evidence, and competencies in the areas of United States history and
government, WA State history, and contemporary world history.
Demonstrations will reveal knowledge of U.S. history/constitution,
economics, sociology, civics, political science, or international relations.

student competency in such areas of Social Studies:

Two health and fitness credits that at minimum align with current essential academic
learning requirements at 10th grade and/or above.
○ Credit may be earned in:
■ Competencies required for Health may be achieved through specific
Certifications/Licenses such as CPR/First Aid Certification or
Certification in HIV/Blood-born pathogens.
■
Competencies required for Fitness may be achieved through specific
Fitness Certifications/Licenses recognized as a requirement for
employment or volunteer in fields of fitness, movement.

Assessment upon ability to demonstrate knowledge, provide a collection
of evidence, and competencies in the fields of health and fitness.
Demonstrations will reveal (1) knowledge and applications of key
movement and fitness concepts and (2) understanding of how physical
activity interests and abilities change across a lifetime.
■ Prior Experience to only fulfill FITNESS REQUIREMENTS: 405 hours=
1 credit through Students may be excused from the physical portion of the
fitness requirement under RCW 28A.230.050. Such excused students
shall be required to substitute equivalency credits in accordance with
policies of boards of directors of districts, including demonstration of the
knowledge portion of the fitness requirement.
One arts credit that at minimum is aligned with current essential academic learning
requirements at 10th grade and/or above.
Pursuant of WAC 180-51-060, Fine Arts is defined as a "one credit requirement selected
from visual or performing arts or any of the (core high school) subject areas”.
○ Credit may be earned in:
■ Prior Work Experience: 405 hours= 1 credit
One credit is occupational education. “Occupational education” means credits
resulting from a series of learning experiences designed to assist the student to acquire
and demonstrate competency of skills under student learning goals. Skills are required
for success in current and emerging occupations.
○ Credit earned through:
■ Completion of Portfolio Based Competency Assessment Course
This class is designed to help adults, 21 and over, develop a portfolio
upon which competency of skills required by Washington State law to
receive a high school diploma will be assessed. Each Community and
Technical College can design projects that reflect their individual needs. A
section of the portfolio will require students to reflect upon Occupational
history, personal learning, workplace trends and goal development for
future needs beyond the high school diploma.
Five and one-half electives:
○ Credit earned through:
■ Study in a world language other than English or study in a world
culture may satisfy any or all the required electives.
■ Elective credit may be achieved through extra coursework or credit
transcribed in high school transcripts, college coursework, or other
formal licenses or certificates.
