Putting together a
great project team
The Optimum Consortium Size
• The project should relate to the call
focus and objectives
• Using the synopsis define the tasks on
measurable objectives
• Only add partners to fill the defined roles
Building a team
• Team of 20 people, own agendas, many
will not know one another; individual
interpretations of call/objectives
• Coordinator must create a single vision
in order to formulate a joined-up
proposal
• Letter of intent/confidentiality
Work Integration
• Have a high level outline of the project
• Do not just piece together disparate inputs
from partners
• Show good suitability between partner and
role
• Ensure the major themes run consistently
through the proposal
• Present the work in a logical way and written
by one person
Partner description
• Show a consortium balanced in competencies and
distribution
• Show how the consortium is balanced in terms of type
of organisation appropriate to the Instrument
• Too many SMEs with small deliverables leads to
fragmentation
• No large end user will throw doubt on market
knowledge and exploitation
• Insufficient research partners will cast doubt on the
quality of the science
• Overlapping skills in consortium mean lower risk
Project Consortium
• Consortium agreements - letter of intent/confidentiality
agreement at proposal stage: draft CA should address
implementation/internal organisation & management;
rights and obligations re: background/results
• Have good management structures; work package
teams are used effectively; assign roles where
necessary
• Project Manager should establish good relations with
the Project Officer
