Unit Plan # 1

Title: Functions

Subject: Algebra 2 Length of Time: 11 days

Unit Summary: The unit covers function basics including relations, functions, notation, domain, range, continuity, combinations, composites and inverses. At the end of this unit students will be able to manipulate functions algebraically and identify inverse functions.

Learning Targets

Conceptual Category: Function Domain: Interpreting Functions

Cluster: Interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context

F-IF.A

F-IF.B

F-IF.5

Understand the concept of a function and use function notation.

Interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context.

Relate the domain of a function to its graph and, where applicable, to the quantitative relationship it describes.

Conceptual Category: Functions Domain: Building Functions

Cluster: Build new functions from existing functions.

F-BF.A.1

F-BF.B.4

Build a function that models a relationship between two quantities.

Find inverse functions

Unit Essential Question:

How can knowing and being able to interpret the properties of functions help us predict and interpret data?

Unit Enduring Understandings:

The domain is the set of all possible input values for a function, and the range is the set of all output values.

A relation is continuous if the points are not disjoint.

A relation is a function when each input has exactly one output.

Use of function notation.

Combine functions using mathematical operations.

Create basic composite functions.

Find the inverse of a function from coordinates, tables, equations and graphs.

Unit Objectives:

Students will be able to identify the properties of functions such as domain, range.

Students will be able to use function notation, and find the value of the function.

Students will be able to perform operations with functions.

Students will be able to combine functions and create composite functions.

Students will be able to find and identify inverse functions.
