LUPE SPRING 2016 GUIDELINES
STUDENTS CURRENTLY TAKING J101 ON CAMPUS in SPRING 2016
Dates & Procedures:
• The mandatory initial group LUPE testing, using Blackboard (JOUR 101 LUPE Blackboard
Community) in BL008 (basement of Bracken Library), will be March 15, 16, and 17.
• Blackboard LUPE testing retakes will be available in the RB 134 lab starting March 21.
• A total of four Blackboard retakes will be permitted in the RB134 Blackboard Testing Lab.
• Only one test per week is permitted. Testing periods:
Week 1-March 15-17 (BL008)
Week 2-March 21-27(RB134)
Students must coach in AJ 337 after two failed attempts. If students miss an attempt, it
counts as a failed attempt.
Week 3-March 28- April 3 (RB134)
Week 4-April 4-10 (RB134)
Week 5-April 11-17 (RB134)
 Last day for LUPE coaching: Thursday, April 14 before 6 p.m.
• Last day for Blackboard LUPE testing: Sunday, April 17.
Things to know about the LUPE:
• 100-question, multiple-choice test
• You have one hour to complete the test.
• Required passing score is 70 percent or higher.
• Mandatory group testing using Blackboard: March 15-17. BSU Photo ID is required.
• Journalism Writing Center (JWC) staff will visit J101 classes the week of March 7 for test sign-ups.
• Students are responsible for contacting the JWC if they miss the in-class sign-ups to register for the
mandatory first testing week by Monday, March 14.
• Passing the LUPE serves as prerequisite to advanced journalism and telecommunication
courses. You will not be permitted to enroll in selected courses without passing the LUPE.
• Multiple ways to prepare for the LUPE:
• One-on-one coaching sessions at the Journalism Writing Center (AJ 337)
• Writer’s Workshop available online (jwcbsu.com)
• Preparation/study materials (e.g., PowerPoint) also on JWC website
 Group coaching sessions in AJ 326
RB 134 Blackboard Testing Lab Hours/Availability Instructions
To check the hours in the RB 134 Blackboard lab, follow these instructions:
• Visit www.bsu.edu/labs
• Click “computer-based testing labs”
• https://apps.bsu.edu/TestingLab/
Taking the LUPE on Blackboard (This is a walk-in lab. You don’t need an appointment.)
To take the LUPE in the Blackboard Testing Lab, follow instructions below:
• Student must present BSU student I.D. to enter lab.
• At testing computer, log into your Blackboard account (www.blackboard.bsu.edu)
• Find the J101 LUPE Community (Under My Communities – not courses)
• Begin LUPE Attempt 1 (Or, if retaking, the LUPE attempt number you are on)
• Students who do not pass the LUPE on their second attempt must receive mandatory coaching
before Blackboard will allow a third attempt. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the JWC for
coaching.
Failing to take or pass the LUPE by the deadline
 If you did not pass or take the LUPE by the deadline, the student must wait until the following
semester to retake the LUPE.
 The student may register as a By Permission student for the following semester after the current
semester’s testing deadline by visiting the JWC (AJ 337).
 It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the By Permission testing dates for the following
semester. Students can find these dates by visiting the JWC (AJ 337).
 If you have extenuating circumstances that prevented you from taking the LUPE the current
semester, please see the director of the JWC.
 Extenuating circumstances include: transfer students, students who live outside of Delaware
County, students who experienced trauma, bereavement, etc.
 If you did not miss the LUPE due to extenuating circumstances, you will not be given an extension
for the current semester.
Last day of Blackboard LUPE testing for J101 on-campus students: Sunday,
April 17, 2015, 1 hour before the lab closes.
*Students must enter the Blackboard Testing Lab one hour prior to closing on this day to test.
Note: Students will be able to view their score immediately following the completion of the LUPE in the
Blackboard Testing Lab (RB134). It is the student’s responsibility to continue testing until a score of 70 percent
or higher is achieved. Remember: Only one test per week is permitted. LUPE coaching is encouraged and
available in AJ 337: Monday 11 a.m.- 6 p.m., Tuesday 11 a.m.- 6 p.m., Wednesday 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. and
Thursday 11 a.m.- 6 p.m.

STUDENTS NOT ENROLLED IN ON-CAMPUS/ONLINE J101 in SPRING 2016
Supplemental/By Permission Students
By permission students include: digital sports production students, transfer students, online students
who live outside of Delaware county, students who were enrolled in J101 a previous semester and did
not pass or take the LUPE, and students with extenuating circumstances.
Dates & Procedures:
• Starting the week of January 11, 2016, Supplemental/By Permission students may begin LUPE
testing. These students have five attempts, one per day until the last day of testing.
• Students must visit the JWC in AJ337 during operating hours (posted at the end of guidelines)
and at least 24 hours before they wish to test so that the coaches are able to add them to the “BY
PERMISSION LUPE BLACKBOARD COMMUNITY.”
• Students who do not pass the LUPE on their second attempt must sign up for mandatory LUPE
coaching before being allowed a third attempt.
• Students will test in the RB134 Blackboard Testing Lab. Students should report to AJ337 to be
added to the community before entering the Blackboard Testing Lab.
 Last day for LUPE coaching of By Permission students: Thursday, Feb. 11, 2015, before 6
p.m.
• Last day for Blackboard LUPE testing: Sunday, Feb. 14, 2015.
 BSU Photo ID is required.
