SUMMARY
 Sonnet 18- This poem is comparing someone with the seasons.
Shakespeare feels that no matter how old she gets she will always be
beautiful to him.
“but thy eternal summer shall not fade”.. “when in eternal lines to time
thou grow’st”
 Sonnet 54- The poet feels like he is an actor on a stage showing different
types of emotions for one girl but she is immune to tragedy or happiness.
“yet she, beholding me with constant eye, delights not in my mirth nor rues
my smart”… “what then can move her?... She is no woman, but a senseless
stone.”
LOVE
SPEAKER &
SUBJECT
 Sonnet 18 – The speakers POV towards this girl is that she is perfect. He
thinks that she will be this perfect for the rest of her life no matter
whether she gets old or grows wrinkles. He is addressing this to the love of
his life.
 Sonnet 54 – This speakers POV is someone in love but frustrated. He
wants her to show her emotions towards things he does for her. No matter
what he does she is never shows how she feels about it. He is addressing
this to someone he loves and wants to know what will make her express
her feelings to him.
LOVE
STYLE
Sonnet 18
• Personification- (lines 9-10)- he is giving life to summer. He may see this
one girl with so much beauty but to other people she may not be such a
big deal. It raises self esteem.
• Metaphor – (line 3-4)- trying to say that the months can move with a blow
of the wind which is impossible because May cant move and does not have
life.
Sonnet 54
• Hyperbole-( line 12)- just because you don’t laugh it doesn't’t mean that
your heart will be a rock.
• Personification- (line 14) saying that this woman is not a human but a rock
because she doesn’t have feel any emotions.
