BULL OF INDICTION
OF THE EXTRAORDINARY
JUBILEE OF MERCY
FRANCIS
BISHOP OF ROME
SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD
TO ALL WHO READ THIS LETTER
GRACE, MERCY, AND PEACE
May the message of mercy reach everyone, and may no one be indifferent to the
call to experience mercy. I direct this invitation to conversion even more fervently
to those whose behaviour distances them from the grace of God. I particularly
have in mind men and women belonging to criminal organizations of any kind.
For their own good, I beg them to change their lives. I ask them this in the name
of the Son of God who, though rejecting sin, never rejected the sinner. Do not fall
into the terrible trap of thinking that life depends on money and that, in
comparison with money, anything else is devoid of value or dignity. This is
nothing but an illusion!
The same invitation is extended to those who either perpetrate or participate in
corruption. This festering wound is a grave sin that cries out to heaven for
vengeance, because it threatens the very foundations of personal and social life.
Corruption prevents us from looking to the future with hope, because its
tyrannical greed shatters the plans of the weak and tramples upon the poorest of
the poor. It is an evil that embeds itself into the actions of everyday life and
spreads, causing great public scandal. Corruption is a sinful hardening of the
heart that replaces If it is not combated openly, sooner or later everyone will
become an accomplice to it, and it will end up destroying our very existence.
This is the opportune moment to change our lives! This is the time to allow our
hearts to be touched! When faced with evil deeds, even in the face of serious
crimes, it is the time to listen to the cry of innocent people who are deprived of
their property, their dignity, their feelings, and even their very lives. To stick to
the way of evil will only leave one deluded and sad. True life is something entirely
different. God never tires of reaching out to us.
Pastors Thoughts
Our Holy Father as he continues to prepare us for the upcoming Holy Year of Mercy,
specifically invites us to the openness to God’s mercy that is repentance from sin. Even
those most deeply involved with sin are called to repent and receive God’s mercy, lest
they be lost forever. God’s desire for mercy is not reserved for just the “average” sinner,
but He wants everyone, even the worst of sinners to know His love. Today that would
be those given to lives of crime and corruption, where the pursuit of their goals of power
and wealth lead them to the most terrible of deeds and the worst of abuses of their
fellow human beings. We might be tempted to consign all of these people to what we
think are their justly deserved punishments - but God wants to save them! No one
should be regarded as absolutely beyond saving! No one is beyond forgiveness if they
but open their hearts in sorrow to the Lord. If the worst of us is loved by God and can
obtain mercy, how much less excuse do we have to fail to seek it out, to not welcome it
in our lives, to not seek to repent and be saved? In this Year of Mercy, as we ourselves
seek mercy, let us give up our judgments of others in their sins and failings, in the hope
of seeing them likewise saved by the Lord!
EL SENOR DE LOS MILAGROS
This weekend our Parish, together with the members of the Peruvian community of
Hazleton, celebrates El Senor de los Milagros - the Lord of the Miracles, Jesus our
Crucified Lord who gives Life. This is the great national devotion of the Peruvian people,
honoring how our Lord saved them over and over. It is an opportunity for us as a Parish to
come to Christ to likewise seek His grace and the miracles we need for our lives and others.
We are honored that this year, the main celebrant of the Noon Mass today will be Very
Rev. Manuel Manrique, OSJ, Provincial Suprerior of the Oblates of St. Joseph in Peru.
After Mass there will be a public procession with the Holy Image, followed by a festival
with music, food and dancing - free to all.
DIOCESAN ANNUAL APPEAL
“Educating the future generations of the faithful.”
Shaping the next generation of the faithful through a Catholic education in our
schools and parishes is an essential mission of the Diocese of Scranton. Last year,
more than 5,000 elementary, middle and high school students benefited from the
academic programs and spiritual guidance offered by our Catholic Schools. More than
18.000 children received religious education in parish-based programs, instilling in
them an intimate knowledge of the faith and the love of God, and fostering a desire to
serve one another.
