LCCC CO-REC VOLLEYBALL RULES
I.
II.
RIGHTS AND DUTIES OF PLAYERS AND TEAM PERSONNEL
A.
Court shoes only are allowed. No black-soled shoes are allowed. It is
advised that jewelry such as rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets
not be worn. Hats are prohibited indoors; however, bandannas and
headbands are acceptable. Officials of each match will determine
legality of any such items.
B.
The ball becomes dead if at any time it contacts the sidewalls, back
walls, bleachers, or if it crosses the vertical plane of an adjacent court
or team bench area. Teams may play the ball off the ceiling on their
side, but it is out on the opposite side.
C.
Time-out requests: Each team is allowed two (1) time-out in each
game. The length of a time-out is limited to thirty (30) seconds.
D.
If a player starts questioning or arguing with the officials or
scorekeeper, a player a warning will be issued. For rude behavior, a
second minor offense, or other serious offenses a penalty is issued by
the official and recorded on the score sheet. A penalty automatically
entails the loss of service by the offending team if serving, or if not
serving, the award of a point to the opponents.
E.
A second act warranting the issuance of a penalty to the same
individual during the same match results in the expulsion of that player.
F.
Extremely offensive conduct (such as obscene or insulting words or
gestures) towards officials, scorekeepers, spectators, or other players
will result in the expulsion of the team member from the match in which
the offense occurred. Expelled individuals must leave the court area
and the facility.
G.
A second expulsion during the match or actual physical aggression
towards an official, scorekeeper, spectator, or another player results in
the disqualification of the individual team member as well as forfeiture
for the entire team.
H.
Warnings (yellow cards) carry over from game to game.
THE TEAMS
A.
Co-Rec 6 on 6 Volleyball League (Fall Semester)
1. A team consists of six (6) players: A team may start and continue
a game with five (5) players. If an additional player shows up to
play, the player must be immediately put into the game. If the
game is started with fewer than six players, when the other
players arrive, they must be inserted to the left of the server.
2. There must be at least two (2) women on the court at all times.
No exceptions.
3. Only two varsity volleyball athletes can play on a team.
III.
RULES OF PLAY:
A.
Games are to begin promptly: Forfeit time is ten (10) minutes. If a
team is not prepared to begin the first game of a match, they shall
have five (5) additional minutes before forfeiting the second game and
the match.
B.
Time between games of a match will be a maximum of three minutes.
If a team is not ready to play at this time, a team warning will be
issued. A second warning will result in a penalty.
C.
League standings shall be determined by match winners, not individual
game winners.
D.
Matches will consist of the best three out of five games or which team
has the most wins by the end of the hour. The first four games will be
Rally Scored to twenty-five (25) points win by two (2) or first to thirty
(30) points. The fifth game will be Rally Scored to fifteen (15) points
win by two or first to (21) points.
E.
If hands are not together when making a two-handed hit, a double hit
will be called. However, a single-handed hit will be allowed as long as
the ball is not carried.
F.
In case of a block, the blocker may return the ball. The block is not
considered a hit by the blocker nor is it counted as one of three hits
allowed on each side.
G.
Maximum of three (3) team hits: Each team is allowed a maximum of
three successive hits of the ball in order to return the ball to the
opponents playing area.
H.
A spike is legal only if it is hit downward with one hand.
I.
Free substitution will be allowed; however, when substituting a player
they must be inserted to the immediate left of the server. The only
exception is when substituting for an injured player.
J.
Contact of ball with body: The ball may contact any part of the body.
K.
Play and the service: The serving of the ball must be hit with one
hand (open or closed) or any part of the arm while the ball is directly in
the hand, dropped or tossed.
1. The server has five seconds after the official's whistle to serve.
2. If the server elects not to hit the ball after releasing it for service,
he/she may catch the ball or allow it to drop to the ground and will
be allowed a re-serve.
3. If the ball is served before the official's whistle for service, a reserve will be directed. A second occasion during the same match
by the same team will result in a side out.
L.
Serving faults: A side out will be awarded if any of the following
serving faults occur:
1. Ball passes under the net
2. Ball touches an antenna or does not pass over the net completely
between the antennas or their indefinite extensions.
M.
Serving: The ball may touch the net and go over as long as it is
between the vertical extensions.
N.
Screening the players of the serving team must not prevent the
receiving player from watching the server or trajectory of the ball.
Screening is illegal and a fault.
O.
Positions of players at service: At the time the ball is contacted for
the serve, the placement of players must conform to the service order.
1. In front or back row, the center player may not be as near the
right sideline as the right player nor as near the left sideline as the
left player. No back row player may be as near the net as the
corresponding front row player. After the ball is contacted, players
may move from their respective positions.
2. Before the start of a new game, the serving order may be
changed.
P.
All serves must be returned with a two-handed, one-handed bump, or
a set. A served ball cannot be spiked. Serves cannot be blocked.
Q.
Play at the net: Ball crossing the net - to be legal, the ball must cross
the net entirely between the antennas or their assumed indefinite
vertical extension.
R.
Player contact with the net: If a player contacts the net during play
with any part of their body or uniform, other than hair, including that
portion outside the antennas, it is a fault. If the ball is driven into the
net with such force that it causes the net to contact a player, such
contact is not a fault.
S.
Simultaneous contact by opponents: If opponents contact the net
simultaneously, it shall constitute a double fault resulting in a play over.
T.
Crossing the centerline: Contacting the opponent's play area with
any part of the body except the feet is a fault. Touching the opponent's
play area with a foot or feet is not a fault providing that some part of
the encroaching foot or feet remains on or above the centerline.
U.
General play: A frontline player may play the ball anywhere on the
court. A back line player may not attempt to spike the ball or block
when he/she is in front of the ten-foot spiking line. Also, he/she may
not play a ball that is completely above the net. If a back row player
attempts the above, it is called a foot fault and a side-out or a point is
to be awarded. A back row player may attempt to spike a ball as long
as he/she takes off behind the ten foot spiking line. Back row players
may never participate in a block!
