CIGRE Technical Committee Strategic Directions (SD)
SD1: Prepare the “strong and smart” power system of the future
This future power system will have to wheel over long distances bulk power from non carbon sources; it
will interconnect the local grid, to compensate for the geographical/temporal variability or lack of flexibility
of these sources. It will interface local energy networks (microgrids) which allow the optimized operation
of dispersed generation, intelligent loads, storage.. This future Power system will rely massively on new
techniques, UHV, DC and Power Electronics, ICT...
SD2: Make the best use of the existing equipment and system
Use better the full built-in capacity, operate the system nearer to its limits; operate the assets up to the end
useful life, assess their condition, maintain, refurbish, extend their life, replace...
SD3: Answer the environment concerns
Develop environment friendly materials, less intrusive techniques (cables); use efficiently the assets;
reduce carbon footprint of electricity…
SD4: Develop knowledge and information
Technical expertise, cooperation of worldwide experts and access to information are keys for the success
of this evolution.

CIGRE Technical Committee information
Secretary General
A job specification was published to get a new Secretary General.
Philippe Adam (former TC secretary) is supporting the Central Office
on a basis of 3 half days per week. No specific crisis.
TC Awards
TC awards will move from an annual basis to a biennial one.
SC chairman will deliver the Awards during the CIGRE Paris session.
CIGRE Web site
The status and current problems are clarified. The web site should be
adapted to CIGRE rules. Update of the password on line is requested.
CIGRE Green book
Reference Books are in good progress for SC B1 and B2. SC B3 starts.
CIGRE symposium
Too many papers were cancelled and led to a late reorganization of the
Session. Lisbon: 33/124=27%, Auckland: 25/119=21%
4
CIGRE Technical Committee Projects
Based on TC strategic directions, several TC projects on emerging
problems in power system have been promoted.
Network of the future
TC report on 10 technical issues was completed and the main
activities are shifted to WGs. TC continues to review their progress.
The information on renewable energy challenges will be added.
HVDC grids
TC project will be established when B4 is ready to consider a wider
information of other SCs.
Disaster recovery / response
C1 chairman presented the paper on how TSO should train to be able
to cope with a fast recovery after a disaster affecting the network.
UHV
TC project was disbanded since UHV standardization progressed at
IEC based on technical background information collected in CIGRE.
5
CIGRE Technical Committee Projects
Rural electrification
C6 is the only SC concerned. Due to a lack of expertise in this area,
joint work with organizations such as CIRED or IEEE is needed.
Sustainability
TC project is launched with C3 leader with C6, C1, B2, which would
cover economical, social and environmental aspects. The project will
greatly contribute to the Strategic direction 3.
Transition of the electricity system
C2 chairman will prepare new draft on this topic.
ENTSO-E standard
New European grid code will become law for all customers connected
the European networks. CIGRE should send a position paper to
ENTSO-E. TC chairman proposed to wait for the work of WG A1.29.
